My Review of "A Man on the Inside: Season One"

This show took me by surprise. It has heart, multiple perspectives and clever.

A Man on the Inside: Season One is now available to stream exclusively on Netflix. It is something worth checking out if you have the subscription service. They really upped their game with this show. Though it is a short one, it is definitely a very fun roller coaster ride if you get on it.

This season starts with our main character, Charles. He's a recent widow and living by himself. His daughter, Emily, worries about him as he doesn't have anyone to hang around. Charles sends her interesting articles that he finds via mail. This is very concerning to Emily because she knows that he doesn't know how to grieve the loss of his wife.

One day Emily makes it a mission to tell Charles to find something exciting to do to distract him from his loneliness. He's a very intelligent man since he's a retired architect. Though his interests are quite boring and not very exciting. Reluctantly, Charles agrees and looks for something to do.

That's when Charles stumbles upon a job offer in the newspaper. A private investigation firm is looking for a person with his description to be a spy in an old age home. With so many inadequate applicants, Charles, is the obvious choice for the job.

Basically there's a wealthy pensioner in a nursing home. Her expensive necklace has been stolen. It's up to Charles to figure out the culprit for the crime. Sounds easy enough but when Charles enters this nursing home he finds out everyone there is a sweetheart.

Sure there's a few rotten apples but even they have something that is very admirable about them. You can't help but fall in love with all of the characters in this show. Even smaller characters have some sort of small side story to keep us interested in them. They're all so different from one another even though they're all living the same experiences.

This is where the show really shines. It emphasizes the characters that are involved in the show rather than the minute details of the crime. While this is all happening, the show sneakily does some investigation work without us realizing it. It's fun because I'm kind of trying to solve the crime even though the show doesn't intentionally seem to be trying to.

The clever banter between the characters is also very captivating. I can listen to their conversations and not get bored. Each one of them seem like they have interesting stories that aren't totally explored and you want to know more about them.

It's funny but not hysterically funny. The comedy can be found in the way that we can relate to each of the characters. Some of the comedy is a little dark and some of it pretty light hearted. There is no slapstick in this. It's all pretty dignified and classy. I don't think shows do comedies in this manner anymore.

Everything in this show has some sense of realism that is very relatable. I can see all of us falling into these scenarios that the characters do. If you don't see yourself, you probably see others. It's so grounded and so heartfelt.

The entire season is only 10 episodes at only half an hour each episode so it will fly by without you even noticing it. Closer to the end of the season, I was begging for more and it seems as though I got my wish. They set it up for another season and I can't wait for it to start up.

Overall, I think this is one of the best comedy TV shows to come out of Netflix. I was pleasantly surprised with how entertaining and captivating it all was. Each of the cast drew me in for more and I can't wait to see the next season when it comes out. I have to give this season an 8.5 out of 10. Highly recommended.
