The Cake That Made Christmas
Baking is how I show people that I care about that. It always has been. Partly to bribe them into liking me and partly to reward them for being amazing humans who deserve all the good thing. Because of this I try out new recipes for cakes and biscuits fairly regularly until I find ‘the one’.

Vegan Lasagna
I started my vegan journey a year ago. I liked the idea of veganism on a conceptual level because I saw plenty of PETA videos about factory farming. It made me physically ill to watch little piglets and cows be physically abused just so I could eat meat and dairy products. I knew that ethically it was wrong to eat meat after seeing these videos. Like most people who jump into a vegan lifestyle, I felt overwhelmed because I realized very quickly that veganism requires a commitment to reading labels and researching preservatives. I then ended up down the rabbit hole of forum posts for vegans. For the first 6 months I always felt unsure of myself... my shopping was taking 3 times as long as normal.

Saskatchewan Sweet Rolls: A Blueberry Bannock Recipe For The Adventurous Vegan
For years I have chased a connection to my ancestors. Growing up in a particularly Caucasian community as an indigenous youth, I had very little connection to my heritage. Although my paternal grandmother was a full-blooded Cree woman, her assimilation as a child had been thorough and complete. After being adopted from a residential school my grandmother was raised entirely away from her culture, leaving our connection to the past irrevocably severed. She was stripped of her language and retained none of the ancestral knowledge that should have been passed to her descendants. I have always felt this left a great chasm of unanswered questions in my life. Something essential was missing. History, connection to my truest self, lay vacant in my heart.

Nowadays, the word's definition refers to non-food products. But today, we are going to make Vegan Gluten-Free Black Bean Brownies. Black bean brownies (vegan and gluten-free) require one bowl and about 30 minutes to prepare! One of the best kinds of desserts.

Chocolate Vegan Decadence
For the longest time, I equated veganism with restriction. Deprivation. No butter? No eggs? No cheese? No taste! None of the deliciousness that makes life worth living. Why would anyone do that to themselves? And as a lifelong baker, and one with an admittedly massive sweet tooth, I couldn’t imagine making any baked good taste good without these oh-so-necessary ingredients. And you definitely couldn’t create dessert decadence without them.
