Quiet Firing
I kept reading all these stories about “quiet firing” and then it happened to me. I lived it every single day I came to work; yeah, I later realized that I was a DEI hire. I kept wondering why they hired me in the first place and then it dawned on me, dummy you were a political hire! The social isolation was deafening. It was so loud I couldn’t hear it or maybe didn’t want to believe it was true. I would awaken everyday depressed and with dread going to work among people I knew hated or intensely disliked me but wore a fake smile like a warm blanket on their faces almost every day. Sometimes they let the fake grin slip, and I caught sight of their true feelings. Wow, they thought they were great actors…not. I saw right through it all and that is why I never trusted them or let myself get too close. I did not want to get burned or feel like a fool. I still worked my butt off, often coming home exhausted.

Journal
While on vacation in Vienna, Austria, I traveled by train to Prague, Czech Republic. It felt like a natural place to visit given their mutual history. I met another American on the train who told me that she fell in love with Prague after following an American poet there. She said that it was such a beautiful city. After hearing her boast about its beauty, I couldn't wait to see it. It made every train stop ever more exciting as we approached this medieval gem that I am told even Hitler loved.

Traveling alone is adventurous, frightening, exciting, exhilarating and bold. It is certainly not for the faint at heart because you never know what to expect and you cannot plan for everything. Nevertheless, one must and should take the plunge. Sit down, look at a map or pay attention to one of those travel shows. God knows, I have done both of those many times prior to deciding where to go. Sometimes it comes down to what sounds interesting or advice from a friend.

Extreme to Extreme
Extreme to Extreme Why does it seem so hard to follow the motto of the Greeks? They believe in the means between the two extremes. We here in America always appear to vacillate amid the extremes whether it be Democrat or Republican. We find ourselves running from one to the other in rapid succession barely catching our collective breaths. Once we do settle on something or someone, we find that it is quite often not what we thought, and we end up with “buyer’s remorse”. I firmly believe that lately we are feeling that way all the more.
