The Madness and the Light. Content Warning.
On June 18, 2021, the Oregon coast was shattered by a spree of violence that felt both random and surgical. Four lives were taken in a single morning. One woman was kidnapped and forced to drive a killer across the country. In the center of it all, two names stood out for me: Oen Evans Nicholson, the man unraveling, and Jennifer Lynn Davidson, a woman whose light was extinguished in the very place she brought warmth, wisdom, peace, and light to everyone who walked through the door.

The Deathcare System. Content Warning.
We live in a world where healthcare is commonly referred to as"deathcare" and patients have to fight for a medical professional to listen to them about their medical complaints. Women are told every day their pain is not pain, it's depression. Her pain isn't pain, it's because she's overweight, or she smokes, she doesn't exercise, or she doesn't drink enough water. The same tests are ordered for the same person ten times in a row with no variation in results. That usually results in the doctor throwing up his hands and declaring he or she doesn't know what's wrong but will give you expensive medication to treat four or five different things anyway. Our healthcare system in this country is rated 11th in the world for its standard of healthcare, behind Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore. Oregon is ranked 28th for healthcare access and 28th for healthcare quality, according to US News. Healthcare has become a nightmare for far too many. Nobody should have to fight to get quality medical care, ever!

Nehalem Bay State Park
Just off of Highway 101 in the tiny little town of Nehalem is nestled Nehalem Bay State Park. The park sits on 900 acres of land that was transferred to the State of Oregon from Tillamook County in the 1930s. The park sat stagnant until a flurry of activity in the 1940s and 1950s, when thousands upon thousands of European beach grass, shore pine, and Scotch broom meant to strengthen and stabilize the dunes were planted. After over two decades of hard work, the plants had taken root and fulfilled their intended purpose. Nehalem Bay State Park opened to the public in 1972. Hiking, biking, and equestrian trails weave throughout the park, and an airstrip invites pilots to drop in and camp for the evening. Fishing, crabbing, kayaking, and beachcombing are among the favorite activites at Nehalem Bay State Park. In addition to the RV and tent sites, there is also an equestrian camp, an airstrip camp, hiker/biker campsites, and yurts available. Once inside the campground, the beach is easily accessible through a small hike over the dunes that separate Nehalem Bay State Park from the Pacific Ocean. The wildlife includes bears, elk, deer, and mountain lions. The deer and elk will often graze inside the campground, allowing one the opportunity to watch them in a close-up setting.

Hot Car Deaths
There are on average 38 human hot car death in the United States each year. There are about 54 animal hot car deaths with another 450 being rescued from the dangers of being locked in a hot car. Some of those cases are prosecuted and others are deemed to be tragic accidents with no charges filed. What separates those cases? What determines the responsibility of a parent or guardian? All of the cases involve neglectful actions that led to the death of a child or children. Isn't neglect (child, adult, or animal), in and of itself, the basis for arrest? It would seem that neglect that leads to death would certainly be an arrestable offense. Here we will take a look at some cases from around the United States. You decide for yourself what determines charges in hot car death cases.

Jevammarcsuspire
When my oldest child was about two years old, he was afraid of the dark and the monsters that lurked in the shadows. I made a huge production of grabbing up the telephone immediately and "ordering" the top-of-the-line product in at-home monster defense, a spray that would rid him and the house we lived in of monsters forever. I bought a spray bottle from the local dollar store, covered it in stickers, and labeled it "No More Monsters" with a black sharpie. I soaked orange and lemon peels in hot water (for fragrance) until the solution cooled and then poured it into the bottle. I put it in a box and addressed it to my son, sitting it out on the porch so he could collect and open his "mail". Once he collected his box from the porch, we dressed in bright clothes that in no way matched, but were super bright and fun because monsters don't like bright and happy colors. We put our boots on in case we had to stomp on one that came out of the closet or from beneath the bed trying to get us while we were applying the spray. We were armed with flashlights and the bottle of No More Monsters and went into his bedroom. I sprayed under and beside his bed and in his closet, paying special attention to any shadowy corner where a monster might hide. I sprayed around his toy box and the window and door in his room. We sprayed the hallway and the bathroom, especially behind the shower curtain, for those late-night trips that just couldn't wait. Just one bottle of citrus-flavored water and a super-fun "hunting expedition" with my son, and the monsters were gone. Never again did he express fear of the dark, or what could be hiding in it. He was safe and secure inside his home with his parents that loved him. For some kids, the monsters they are afraid of don't hide under the bed or peek at them from the closet. For those kids, the monsters are human, and their home is their hell. Marcus Wesson named himself Jevammarcsuspire, a combination of Jesus, Marcus, and vampire, and became a monster for the children in his care.

A Father's Fight
Jeff Green stands in front of the Evansville Civic Center holding a sign in his left hand and a picture in the other. The sign reads, "MURDER COVER-UP, OFFICER INVOLVED, LEAVE NO CHILD BEHIND" in simple black bubble letters on a piece of white poster board. The picture is of a beautiful young woman, makeup done and her hair brushed to perfection. He is very soft-spoken, his words enunciated with care, his story heartbreaking.
