Boy mama of 3 - 1 bonus, 1 angel, and 1 hard-of-hearing toddler. I am a work in progress, trying to heal my inner child to be able to be the best mother to my boys. Trying to break generational cycles.

It takes a special person
My bonus boy is almost nine years old! Since he was three months old, I have been a part of his life. I have helped my husband raise this sensitive, loving, intelligent, curious, adventurous little boy. I have mended a heart that I didn't break more times than I can count. I have watched him struggle at his lowest point and helped raise him back up to the goofy, spunky boy that we know and love. I have kissed boo-boos and read bedtime stories. I ensured that he had a full belly and clean clothes before returning to his mom. I have gone above and beyond for this boy to be told, "you are not his mother."

Childhood dreams
Like any little kid, I always thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted, so badly, to be a teacher. I would ask my mom to print off worksheets for my "class," and I would happily play in my room for hours, being the teacher of an imaginary classroom. That dream never died; I never changed my mind until I got to high school.

Breaking generational cycles
They say that the youngest child is the spoiled one which the rules don't apply. I guess that's true if you aren't me. I grew up with two older siblings, S and T. S; the oldest sibling was the 'smart' one. By that, I mean the one who got good grades in school. T, the middle child, my older sibling, was a failure in school. T went to summer school all four years of high school. They had to go to summer school to receive their high school diploma. Then there was me, and I did average in school. I sucked at math and went to summer school for that, but the rest of my grades were decent. I got into a private university, if that matters.

Being a mom is hard.
There's a saying along the lines of 'it takes a village to raise a child.' Well, where is mine? O had his early intervention evaluation today. We already knew that he qualified for EI services because of his hearing loss. Today determined which services would benefit him. I expected the worst-case situation, like usual. But, actually hearing the words about his delays shattered me. I was instantly overwhelmed and couldn't even form a sentence. I blurted out something about his verbal communication not being a worry of mine! What I meant to say was that I understand that it is important but I don't want him to only be able to communicate verbally. I don't have answers about O's hearing loss. We might never get the answers we are looking for. There is a possibility of his hearing getting worse. By the sounds of it, it's permanent. With that in mind, I want him to also learn ASL. I am learning and trying to teach him but he's severely delayed in his communication development. It was to be expected. Have you ever tried to keep hearing aids on a one-year-old? Not an easy task. Some days he does great, other days not so much. But, we try every day.

Advice from a grieving mother. Top Story - February 2022.
I gave birth to my first son at only 23 weeks gestation. He fought for his life for 39 minutes before joining all our loved ones in Heaven. This is not the first child I have lost. I had a miscarriage with my very first at only 7 weeks. I dealt with that pain alone. But, this time I couldn't.

"We tested him three times as part of his newborn screening and he failed every time in both ears." Words no mother wants to hear about her perfect, healthy, newborn baby.
