Wound
Mothers are tricksy things. I suppose daughters are, too, in our own way. Many of us become mothers in turn, don't we? I don't hate my mother. I don't even dislike her. I love her, in exactly the way she deserves. The same, vague and detached way she loved me. Dutiful. That, I lay at her door. After all, she was the one who taught me how to love her, so if I'm doing it wrong, she only has herself to blame. We reap what we sow.

Haunted
I'm not sure when she turned up, exactly. At first she was easy to ignore. Thin and sad-looking. Washed out. Colourless. People say things like, all children are everyone's business, and it takes a village... But so few people really mean that. Most of the time, they don't want anything disrupting their day today life, and they don't want to confront someone else to disrupt theirs, either.

God is Empty, Just Like Me
Of course, the old witch couldn't live forever, although to me (and I'm sure to many others) it felt like she had. As much as I'd despised her, I had to admit that she'd become, in her own way, a pillar in the community. Her funeral was well-attended, the little chapel bursting at its seams with snivelling women of all ages. Each one, surely, remembering their gratitude for her awful service. Each one a wicked, wicked sinner. A flood of gorgeous blooms, perhaps one for each seedling she uprooted and cast away, as if no more than a weed.

Easily Spooked. Top Story - June 2025.
Here I am again, surrounded by chintz, faced with tea and watery eyes, the bloody dog staring at me. What was it Mickey said? I ask the wrong questions. Could be he's right. Well, it's hard to ask the right ones when your stumbling in the dark.

That Infernal Clock
It's a secret, supposedly. What they get up to up there. No one is supposed to know. But lots of us do. Well. We know the what, if not the how. Most of the women, and some of the girls. It's whispered behind hands in church, with dark, exchanged glances.

Strike a Deal
How could a dead person be so casual? And reasonable? Not to mention persistent. Not being a believer, myself, I am not sure how this works. I wonder if I'd somehow made it worse by talking to him. Had I helped anchor him here, in some strange way? Was it like feeding a stray cat, and then not being able to get rid of the creature? I try ignoring him. Pretending I don't see or hear him. Gritting my teeth, tucking my head down and trudging on.
