The baby in his sling was heavy against her. The smell of him hung in the air around and between them. Lingering and following like another companion. Thick with sleep, slightly sour with milk. It clung to her shawl, to her skin, just as much as the dust that rose with every step. It mixed with sweat, and body-smell, and campfire smoke.

The siren rises and falls, at exactly the right pitch to set my hairs on end, and pit my teeth against each other. It feels claustrophobic back here, as if the walls of the ambulance are closing in on me. Beads of sweat break out on my face, and I can feel my breath coming quick and ragged.

Don't Look At My Face, I'm Hideous
If you suspect there's something hideously wrong with your face, it's tempting to look at your reflection to reassure yourself everything is fine. That you are actually no more ghastly than normal. The trick is to avoid doing that until you're somewhere that you can process the information.
