The chair creaked. Helium hissed. Maybe that was his sanity, leaking away...

Larry gripped the armrests, knuckles proud, heart thudding.

I could die up here.

Well. No. That wasn't strictly true. If he died, it would be down there.

Larry gulped.

It'd seemed like a good idea with his feet on the earth. He'd thought it all through. Got his sandwiches, and everything. A BB gun, for when he was ready to descend. A few beers. What more did a man need?

The ground had plummeted away from him rather more sharply than he'd expected. He outsoared birds, and rocketed passed the point of reason.

He glanced down, a terrible thing to do at a time like this. The ground looked absurd at this angle, so far beyond his feet. His Adam's apple seemed keen to join in the aerial activities, and bobbed up and down as if on a bungee.

He landed safely, tangled in power lines and wreathed in legend. Wearing the grin you grin as you ponder the look on the pilot's face when he saw you floating in a lawn chair outside his cockpit at 16000 feet.

Legend.

It made me think of a combination of UP, and Stephen King's Elevation, too

The only shocking thing is that he wasn’t British! It’s the sort of plan that sounds like it’s been hatched in a pub! Great one LC!

I remember that event, so your title grabbed me right away! Your conclusion gave me an extra chuckle. Great story, L.C, failed or otherwise!

The things you learn! Great job, loved the tone I could hear in his reaction to where he would die, “down there “
