The Next Death; Chapter 12
"That doesn't look like much fun," a voice says. I look up to find Samsama'il walking towards me. My eyes flick towards Mr. Mors's office. "Just me. Neal's still busy." Samsama'il stops in front of me, leaning against the counter. He studies my textbook, eyes narrowing. His eyes come up to mine. "That looks like math. And not the easy kind."

A Curse to Break; Chapter 2
"Where are you going, Lena?" I turn in surprise at the call. Tanya stands at the next intersection, looking at me curiously. There's no cunning or calculation in her gaze. I just couldn't get a read on her. She was the daughter of one of the lower nobles and only in her fifth month of life at court. I know she knows all the whispers; she had blatantly asked me about them shortly after her arrival. I figured she had only singled me out as a potential friend upon her arrival as I had seemed to be as much of an outcast as her. She was starting to make friends with the other ladies of the court, yet she still acted as if nothing had changed between us. Was this an act? Part of some larger scheme she was planning?

Something Darker; Chapter 11
My side hurts. It's a dull burning and strumming pain. I woke up in my room at the hotel. Which was both surprising and alarming. Janice is the first person I see, and she tells me what happened. I was slightly annoyed at Zanthus's call, but I don't suppose I was really in any position to argue. When she told me that their mother also knew, I had become alarmed and had been ill at ease until I had met her. She was kind enough, but I was not too thrilled at the idea of so many people knowing.

A Curse to Break; Chapter 1
A breeze blows by stirring the leaves in the tree overhead. One leaf breaks free, beginning its slow, leisurely descent. I track it for a second before letting my eyes drift shut. Soon the autumn air would turn cold in preparation for the fast-approaching winter. When that happened, I wouldn't be able to escape outside. Well, I still could. No one would care if I came out to freeze in the garden. They wouldn't care if I spent my days out in the freezing cold, but they'd whisper that I was finally losing my mind and they already had enough to whisper about. I didn't feel like adding lies to the whispers.

A Curse to Break
The dragon released one last trembling breath, eyes sliding shut for the last time. The boy releases his sword, taking a stumbling step away from the dragon, horror, relief, and grief all mixing in his expression. The woman steps forward, placing a hand on the boy's shoulder. She calmly studies the dead dragon, the dark crimson slowly flowing over its white scales to feed the growing pool on the ground, something like grim satisfaction glinting in her eyes.

Mindless; Chapter 9
When I open my eyes again, I'm- surprisingly- still in my room. My head is pounding, my face hurts, my hands hurt, everything hurts. I push the pain aside though. The lights are off, except for a lamp across the room. The darkness of my room makes me feel as if the darkness has escaped and is trying to suffocate me. I need to turn on the lights.
