Chewing gum is a popular product consumed by millions worldwide but few people realize that many of the ingredients found in conventional gum are alarmingly similar to those used in plastic grocery bags and car tires. This revelation has sparked concern among health and environmental advocates with some calling it a human health emergency. A campaign in the U.K is now pushing for transparency in labeling and a potential ban on plastic based gum urging consumers to rethink their choices. Most conventional chewing gum brands contain synthetic polymers such as polyethylene and butadiene styrene rubber. Polyethylene a common plastic is used in everything from shopping bags to packaging materials. Butadiene styrene rubber on the other hand is found in car tires and industrial products. These materials are used in gum as a base to give it its chewy texture. However because manufacturers are not required to explicitly list these ingredients on packaging most consumers remain unaware that they are essentially chewing on plastic.
