Am I Becoming A Lazy Vocal Writer?

Using Wonderful Art As My Inspiration

By Mike Singleton 💜 Mikeydred Published 4 months ago 2 min read

Introduction

More and more, I seem to be using Art I find on Facebook and other places as inspiration for my writing. Is this wrong?

I use the Challenge prompts that you can find here:

I gather Unofficial Challenges here:

Then Vocal has a lot of prompt stories here:

Should that be enough?

I always look for more.

Some Of The Art That May Be Coming Your Way

There are lots of artists (and writers) on Facebook who seem to just share their work. I am not sure if they get any financial compensation, although some do sell their work on Etsy and elsewhere.

The Glittering Fox is an example of this, and they send their prints around the world, as well as providing me with so much inspiration that we collaborated to produce a beautiful book.

A new artist I have recently discovered is Scott Bateman, whose Facebook page is here. He has been an artist for twenty years, and he has his own website as well:

The Enchanted Booklet shares mostly very old art that it has found. and has resulted in many poems and stories from me. This seems to be a labour of love, and hopefully, they will keep sharing their amazing finds. The cat picture that introduces this piece came from them.

These are just three that I borrow art from for my stories, but there are many more. If I started borrowing from others, it would affect my mental health. I cannot deal with too many plates spinning at the same time.

This poem was inspired by a sculpture I saw in a shop in Newcastle, full details are in the story:

Then there are the willow sculptures of Anna Cross, such as my favourite, The Huntress:

Conclusion

So the conclusion you may draw is that I have little or no imagination, but the reality is that I love finding wonderful things to write about, and all these artists give me a big running start in the writing they inspire me to produce.

Thank you so much for reading, and maybe some of these might inspire you to a Vocal Top Story, or even more.

It is exactly because you have great imagination that you find inspiration in art. Nothing lazy about it. Inspiration pops up in all sorts of funny places and the more you feed your mind with art, life and nature, the more imaginative you become and the more you start to see even more in the everyday.

Just keep doing what you are doing, and you are not a lazy Vocal writer. You are sharing what interests you. Great job.

  • It takes a lot of imagination to be inspired by art. I can't even do that but you wouldn't call me lazy or unimaginative, right? So there you go. Sending you lots of love and hugs ❤️

Mother Combs already beat me to it: art inspires art. It doesn’t matter where your inspiration comes from, so long as you find it and make something of it. It’s no different than a writer drawing on nature or even their own emotions for inspiration. You do you. And so far, you do it wonderfully.

I see nothing wrong with it, Mike. Art inspires art, after all <3

I will take a closer look at the different links you've provided, thanks for those, at a later date. But, wanted to say that you are not someone I'd even think of having no imagination. Taking inspiration from others does not denote to a lack of imagination, much to the contrary I believe. I love that you are always giving shout-outs and references to your inspirations and it helps us learn about the fab writers and artists and bands/singer-songwriters who give your mind that spark. Also, I do really hate when, and this is not a dig at you, but at the way we are made to believe there is a right and wrong way to do anything creative. As long as people are creating stuff that's from their own hand (not AI), whether it comes from existing art in all its many forms, or not, I welcome it and think we should just be able to create. Sorry. That turned into a bit of a rant lol. It was not directed at you though, obviously, just that sentiment that we might need to say "Oh, sorry, but this is why I wrote this thing" when really the reason we write is because we write, regardless of where we get the first spark. Anyway, I do love how selflessly you share your inner workings in your mind and always find it fascinating when I agree or even when I don't quite agree. Great piece, Mike!
