There Are No Vocal Challenges

For Me

Introduction

Well, when I write this there are two live challenges after a couple of days without a Vocal Challenge and you can see them here.

One of them is difficult and one is, in my opinion simple. I have entered both, twice and that should be my limit.

So How Do I See A Vocal Challenge?

To me, a Vocal Challenge is a prompt, with the benefit that I might win a prize in the draw when the challenge finishes. I think the Vocal Challenges are usually interesting, but I don't feel I should enter too many times for fear of repeating what I have already written.

Outside of the Official Challenges, there are many unofficial challenges and sometimes these carry fairly hefty cash prizes, from $5 to $20 to $100, my own challenges just carry three random $1 tips.

For me, the challenge is creating the story and hoping that someone reads, comments and likes it. If I win anything that is a pleasant cherry on the cake, but the most important thing is the cake, not the cherry.

VSS carries monthly threads that contain Unofficial Challenges and they give me more reasons to write. You can see July's here:

If no challenge can inspire you, Vocal have lots of articles full of prompts, which can give you ideas for your creations. I have hardly scratched the surface of these, but they are a phenomenal resource.

So added to the things in life that inspire me, I have lots of things that I can refer to for writing prompts.

It surprises me that for some Vocal Challenges are the be-all and end-all, when for me it is the ability to share my work and the friends that I have made along the way and the encouragement and love that they give me.

Conclusion

Vocal has given me so much, although I criticize them a lot, but that is because I want them to be perfect and I will continue to suggest ways to make that happen.

At this moment in time, there are many things I can write about. Maybe only one person will read it, but my success is that I have written and published it, and I intend to keep doing that as long as I am around here, and I intend to be around here for a very long time.

Thank you for reading and supporting me, without you I would be nothing.

I know what you mean about wanting Vocal to be perfect. I feel we are the 'ones who came first' that people will see as vocal 'oldies' when Vocal is streamlined enough to get really big!

  • Vocal challenges, both official and unofficial are prompts for me as well hehehe

    Excellent topic and write!

  • Very well written.

  • I like your approach. Challenges are prompts. If it gets us writing, it has been successful. I have no delusions of making money from my writing. It is my hobby. "the most important thing is the cake, not the cherry". Well said! Great ponderings, Mike!
