Kings Of Oblivion

Observations On The Bad 'Uns On Vocal And We We Can Do

By Mike Singleton πŸ’œ Mikeydred Published 8 months ago β€’ Updated 8 months ago β€’ 1 min read

Introduction

We are under attack on Vocal from thieves and moronic AI creators. I have to go with the quote "If you couldn't be bothered to write it, I can't be bothered to read it".

Then there are those who repeatedly use the same AI-generated comments on stories and end up on Vocal's most supportive Leaderboard, and I think that results in them becoming the most subscribed to as well, though that may be just my perception.

This morning, I got one of these on my latest challenge. I reported it was spam. If you get these, do not reply or share, but report to Vocal:

DK Shepard has a form to make suggestions for Vocal Changes that you can check out here:

So What Do We Do?

I thought the Pink Fairies' "Kings Of Oblivion" was a perfect description for those who are ruining Vocal with their dross, and cheating with AI.

All we can do is continue producing excellent work and publishing it on Vocal. We need to keep up the good work.

There is a method of stopping thieves from stealing text, although they can always take a screenshot and then use OCR, but if they had to do that, I think they would soon get bored.

CSS can be used to stop copying of text (I'm not sure if that would affect embedded links) but if Vocal could apply that to published stories that would make creators feel a lot safer.

There is an article on it here, though it is technical:

Many creators feel Vocal is unsafe for their work, and this could help them feel better about the Vocal platform.

Conclusion

We need to keep creating and publishing on Vocal, and calling out and reporting any case of plagiarism, abuse or unauthorised AI.

I will be honest, I use AI for my art, but this is about writing, and I give away my AI art on Pixabay.

Thank you for reading, and keep on being your brilliant selves.

The music is "Night Of The Pigs" by Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come, appropriate for those who are causing these problems.

I've been wanting Vocal to install CSS for a while. IK that it would be a hassle for many of us, but I too feel it would stop a lot of the issues. Great Article, Mike

We need to stand united. If AI takes over Vocal because no one feels their work is safe, there won't be a Vocal platform. The other thing I would add is that if anyone recognises a copy of someone's original and hard work, spread the word and let's collectively do what we can to stamp them out.

  • Yes, making it not possible to copy our text would be a good start to curb plagiarism

Good job and good ideas, but let's see what happens in coming weeks.

This is a dominating topic on Vocal, and well it should be. Yes Ai is here and will probably stay. But it sure takes away the creativity of original authors. Now all you have to be is a great self promoter and you can sell your fake stories. But they will succeed while the true writer is erased
