The Knife at My Throat certainly deserves Dishonourable Mention status! Despite my instant misgivings, I stiffened my spine and bravely pressed on past the daunting title! You may be unaware of the extent of my loathing of Horror, in any shape, form, length… it’s way too much for my already overactive imagination!

Just one glimpse of Poppy’s hideous AI generated image was almost the final straw! Having nursing experience in my distant past means I don’t faint at the sight of blood and gore, but Poppy seemed set on liberally splashing it around in the AI image and pretty much throughout the entire poem!

Now I am all broken bones, twisted limbs, a paralytic mind and blood. So much blood.

My suffering wouldn’t be as extreme if she was less adept at wielding her words effectively. I previously harboured no fear of heights, but even this security has been undermined…

I didn’t realise we were standing on a railing of a ten storey balcony until you pushed me over the edge

As if this wasn’t enough to cope with, she then set about ruining pleasant memories of the ocean! I was looking forward to a restorative holiday there in a few weeks… now, even that is in jeopardy!

Your friendship was the ocean’s waves, moulded from the moon itself, curling like a smile. Your betrayal is a tidal wave…

Surely I have little left for her to ruin in my previously sheltered life! Yep, you guessed it… just when I’m finally getting back into Parkrun, she’s causing an anxiety attack about that too!

I run.

And run.

And run, breathlessly

Apparently, running isn’t for enjoyment but a desperate bid for escape!

Just as I sadly conclude there’s no hope, all is lost, she comes in with a gorgeous sunrise of hope… one of my favourites!

I hope you really are dancing under sunrises of bliss and contentment, I only wish it didn’t have to come at the expense of my own lavender and peach horizon.

However, I guess the very worst part of this poem is it’s conclusion…

I want you to know, I’m sorry my presence could not save you in the way my absence seemed to.

Against my will, I ended up appreciating her vividly portrayed struggle coming to terms with her loss. I especially like how she seems to wish the best for her source of anguish.

Must I say it?

Well done Poppy!

You totally deserve a Dishonourable Mention!

Poppy has that ability to make us love her tales in spite of our dislike of horror. Just like Edgar Allen Poe does.
