May - the month of graduation. When valedictorians and salutatorians prepare their speeches to present in front of crowds. Graduation caps and gowns are treated with such care, being readied for the big day. Gifts are purchased to wish the graduate best wishes for a bright future and congratulations on a job well done. Parties are organized down to the smallest detail, just to celebrate this milestone.
The room is an auditorium crowded full. The graduating class marches forward to the front and sits in the first few rows of seats. On the stage, the faculty sits surrounded by roses. The dean (or superintendent, if it's a high school) rises and walks to the podium, makes a few opening remarks or a prayer, then introduces the guest speaker who will present the commencement speech...
What's that you say? What does all this have to do with ViM's May Prompt? Well, I hear all of you, and don't worry, I am getting to that. I want to set the mood, the scene if you will. Pull you all into a graduation ceremony. The memories of the ones from your past.
π
Are you there, in your memories? Sitting in your cap and gown, listening to the dean/superintendent introduce the guest speaker? Are you there? Good.
Now, here is what ViM wants you to do! We want you to write a Commencement Speech as if you were invited to speak to this year's graduating class. We want you to make the speech you wished you would have gotten.

So, get your thinking caps on, decide what you think is the most important, and get to writing.

Sounds like an interesting challenge and way too hard for meβ¦ definitely not a speech maker!π
Here is my entry, https://shopping-feedback.today/writers/let-s-commence%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cdiv class="css-w4qknv-Replies">
Sounds like a great challenge. I have actually been the speaker at the college I worked for. The students chose me to speak. It was quite an honor. I can't remember the whole speech but I do remember telling them "To whom much is given, much is required." (taken from Luke 12:48)
Great!!π·ππΈ
Like Diane, I'm from the UK and the commencement speech isn't really something but I wrote one in the style of my dean's speech after my degree. https://shopping-feedback.today/writers/commencement-speech-z1gs60qfi%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cdiv class="css-w4qknv-Replies">
It's been almost 40 years since I graduated, and I can hardly even remember being there. https://shopping-feedback.today/writers/commencement-speech-class-of-2025-vi-m-s-may-prompt%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cdiv class="css-w4qknv-Replies">
As I am from the UK, and left school at 16, I have never heard a commencement speech, so this is all guesswork, lol. https://shopping-feedback.today/critique/the-best-is-still-to-come%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cdiv class="css-w4qknv-Replies">
Oh this is such a great idea. My dean had to do his speech whilst the orchestra quietly played "Sweet Caroline" in the background.

What a cool and timely idea! On a side note, we didn't get one when my high school class graduated.
Looking forward to seeing the entries π
Just added to the May unofficial story list

Eloquently presented!
This sounds interesting, will have to give it a try.
This is an interesting challenge. Being in the UK, I didn't have a graduation like this. I don't remember any speeches either in high school or college, lol. But I can try and conjure a speech which I would have loved to have heard.
Very interestingβ¦a chance to reminisce about how we would change the world, because isnβt that what youth gave us. Hope β€οΈ
Mr Brain didn't give me a chance to even start. He said NO before I was even done reading this π π
Graduation, I'm valedictorian, & it's the first time in forever they don't plan for valedictorian & salutatorian addresses. I guess they were afraid of what I might say. (I know they weren't afraid of Becky Casey, lol.)
I teach students who'll graduate at the end of the year...but I'll prepare a commencement speech ahead!
Cool challenge!
