Keir Starmer Describes The UK's Role in Trump's Middle Eastern Peace Plan.

Trump and Starmer Meet in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Trump and Starmer in front of other world leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh.

As Trump's peace plan comes into play, Sir Keir Starmer has been speaking about what the UK could bring to the table. Sir Keir described the Trump Peace Plan as a "historic day". Mr. Starmer said, "What happens tomorrow really matters, and that's why I've been discussing with leaders all day is what part can we play?". Sir Keir stated, "And we, in the UK in particular, I think, can play a part in monitoring the ceasefire, but also decommissioning the capability of Hamas and their weaponry, drawing on our experience in Northern Ireland. So the question today has already moved to, how do we implement, how do we make sure this moves forward? It's really important we keep the focus. We mustn't (make) any missteps now".

On Air Force One as Trump flew to Sharm el-Sheikh, he told reporters his sights for now were not on any state of Palestine. His sole aim right now was to rebuild Gaza. Of course, this might be Trump being hopeful that his plan comes to fruition. Remember, the release of Palestinian detainees and Israeli hostages is just the beginning. Not wishing to rain on the parade of the genuine relief of Israeli and Palestinian families, glad that their long- detained family members are home. However, there are a few things that could cause bumps in the road that could upset or even derail (God forbid) the whole peace plan. Will Hamas disarm, and who will assume control of Gaza in the interim? Plus, what are the prospects of an eventual Palestinian state?

Donald Trump was asked if all this could eventually lead to a Palestinian state. Trump reaffirmed his sole task was to rebuild Gaza. At this time, he also reaffirmed that a state for Palestine was not on the agenda as yet.

Meanwhile, the alleged war criminal and alleged fraudster Benjamin Netanyahu told the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) that he was committed to the peace plan. Really Mr. Netanyahu? Are you really committed to Trump's peace plan with all its flaws? Why are you committed to this peace plan? When your inclination all the way along has always been to scupper and sabotage previous peace plans so you could get back to war. No doubt because you felt Trump's boot across your neck. Which is why you telephoned the leadership in Qatar to apologise for your failed raid. Which did not kill the Hamas leadership in Doha, allegedly and ironically, while discussing peace. It's also Trump's boot on Hamas that has made them sign up to this peace plan.

Of course, people hoping for peace have had their hopes raised of a lasting peace. Trump has made a big thing of his peace plan, as he said in Sharm el-Sheikh, this is the greatest thing to happen in the Middle East in 3,000 years. And if God forbid the whole thing goes boobs up, Trump's over-the- top language will make him look very silly. Trump, as a man in the limelight, is very aware of his public image. He will not want this peace deal to fail. Trump will be banging heads together and stomping his authority like Kong in the Hollow Earth to ensure this deal works.

However, if none of the other 19 points in his peace plan work, Trump has shown the tendency to walk away from things he deems are not worth his while. Which is what he did when he tried to get Putin and Zelenskyy to the negotiating table.

So, Tony Blair has been put forward to oversee the international governance of Gaza. Backed by Palestinian technocrats to run the territory. However, Trump added a caveat that Blair's serving on the international committee in Gaza would depend on his popularity. And given Blair's sullied reputation in the Middle East, his popularity is down the drain. Middle Easterners must be thinking, what next, Trump appointing Blair's buddy George Bush to some position on the international committee?

Gaza will be policed by an Arab force backed by Palestinian police. Hamas has put its name forward to fill the uniforms for the Palestinian police force. However, for the Israelis and others, that will be a definite "No"! 200 American soldiers in Israel will monitor the situation in Gaza. Hamas disagrees with an international committee governing Gaza. It says that Palestinians should be given a choice as to who rules Gaza.

Hamas itself has said it will back away from governing Gaza in favour of other Palestinian groups taking control of Gaza. Hamas, whether it disarms or not, is not going anywhere. Israel, despite two years of solidly pounding Gaza to rubble, has failed to defeat Hamas. What role Hamas will play in the future of Gaza remains to be seen (if any role at all). Israel, in line with the Trump Peace Plan, has pulled back and will continue to pull out of Gaza if nothing happens to complicate the peace plan by either side.

Eventually, if all goes well in Gaza, there is the possibility of a Palestinian nation. Mamoud Abbass, who attended the peace ceremony in Sharm el-Sheikh, may end up governing Gaza.

Of course, the Palestinian Authority is riddled with corruption and is opposed by many Palestinians on the West Bank. So for this to happen, the Palestinian Authority, which is opposed to Hamas, must reform internally, especially if it becomes the government of a future Palestinian state.
