I Don't Know What To Say

About What Happened In The USA 5th November 2024

By Mike Singleton 💜 Mikeydred Published about a year ago Updated about a year ago 3 min read

Introduction

I have no words for what happened. I did not see it coming, because I knew how it would destroy the lives of so many close friends. I can't find anything about this dark day. I always want to be positive and raise people's spirits but I am struggling today.

For some reason "London Can Take It" by Public Service Broadcasting came to mind because I believe that this disaster can be survived. So here goes.

Thoughts On The Situation

In 2019 I believed the young people's vote would give a good election result. I think young people assumed the same and didn't bother voting because they assumed someone else would. The old white people turned out in their droves and voted for another five years of right-wing destruction of the country's infrastructure and economy, alongside increased racism, xenophobia and misogyny.

On November the 5th 2024, we believed the women's vote in the USA would give us a rejuvenation of women's rights, and a caring government.

Instead, a combination of hateful white old voters, men and women, swamped the votes and returned a fascist nazi theocracy to the White House.

I have talked today with my American friends and this was one of our exchanges which upset me and made me realise that, even though there is not much I can do, I need to be here for everyone there and give them as much support as I can, though I don't know what that will be:

My observation is that I live next door to homophobes, fake Christians, sexist, racist assholes that will be free to be as ugly as possible for the forseeable future and there's nothing more I can do about it. This was a tipping point for our nation and we failed to land on the side of humanity.

I am worried for the world. A real monster has brought out the truth of Americans, at least a good portion of them and it's terrifying

These are the thoughts of two of my close friends.

People have complained about the price of gas and eggs, but they have voted in a party that have said they will put huge tariffs on imports which will make prices go up much further.

Because there are so few big corporations that own all we buy, fuel, power, food, these are now free to price gouge as much as they want. Under this new government prices are only going one way, and it won't be down.

These voters also showed that they think the worst man is still better than the best woman.

Some GOP supporters told me that Joe Biden was a paedophile because he was seen in public with his grandchildren. When I told them about this, they didn't believe me. When I showed them this they never spoke to me again.

Sex traffickers, rapists, sexists, and racists have all been given the freedom to do anything they want under this new regime.

Xenophobia and racism is likely to result in concentration camps and deportations with the backing of the Christian Right. Families will be torn apart and the devils at the top will be laughing.

Conclusion

I am hoping that the good people in the USA can find a way to combat this situation, and if I can help in any way.

It is like the Second World War never happened or more than half the voters in the USA thought the wrong side won.

Next week is Remembrance Day. Did all those brave women and men die for nothing?

I am still in shock, as are my American friends. I hope we can find a way through this.

I just found this which is allegedly the voting breakdown:

I'm still in shock. I still can't believe he actually won. I'm still in denial

To quote a very famous line by an ex Australian Prime Minister some years ago now - "God help us because he is the only one who can." Can somebody, anybody explain to me hoe the leader of the greatest democracy in the world (well it used to be) can get to a point where a convicted criminal can run the country and in all likelihood will just pardon himself as if nothing happened? Doesn't that in itself speak volumes about the moral standing of this guy or is it just me? (PS I am not American and do not live in America).

I can't believe I had allowed myself to have hope. I told myself not to, but I couldn't help it - listening to so many first-time voters coming out to support her. Many republicans claiming to vote Democrat for the first time in their lives. I really believed in us, and now I'm heartbroken and scared.

Mike, you speak my Danish thoughts out, I am shocked. It is not only Americans going to suffer, every single freedom loving country in the entire world is going to suffer because of this one man's muddy talking, I simply do not understand, that western people can buy his shit.

A dark day in America, a dark day indeed... I still can't believe that man won, after all the things he's said, after all the things he's done. I still can't believe it. Good article, well done 👍.

It doesn't make much sense. The voter turnout was allegedly horrendous. I don't understand how the democratic party can have 10 mil+ less votes than 4 years ago, even if Biden didn't really get anything done. You'd think a convicted felon who was impeached twice and has dozens of rape allegations against him couldn't even run for the presidency let alone win it. I'm mourning for my country and the marginalized groups who live here and will be negatively impacted by this outcome. Appreciate the solidarity from overseas. Much love

If it makes you feel any better, most of us are still in shock which is quickly switching to organizing ways to build bulwarks.

  • Aw Mikey I am not American but I feel absolutely devastated. The US has such a massive influence on the lives of women across the world. An insightful piece - thank you so much for sharing x C 🤍
