Epic Beginnings Challenge Winners

Congratulations to first-time winner Gerard DiLeo for Capitano Neutrino — we do like it when a challenge entry makes us laugh. Here the laws of physics, combined with a passion for durum flour, produce Italy’s first superhero, “Capitano Neutrino (née Colino Semicolini), who can seize criminals on a whim, subdue them, and render them inert in wheat semolina bondage.” Spaghettifiction forever, we say!

We had so many entries of rich inventiveness for this challenge. In second place comes kateresa’s Florist Impressions — and welcome, kateresa, as you’re relatively new to Vocal. We don’t want to give too much of this stylish story away, but it plays on language to give its heroine visions of the future. Bravo.

And in our runners-up, there were too some real-world definitions of a superhero. Clara Elizabeth Hamilton Orr Burns in Taste is Memory shows that a vocation can become a great power; similarly, a little boy discovers (alas!) what he is capable of in M. A. Mehan’s Mama’s Superhero. We also loved Colin Gao’s Chosen Antagonist, a tale of rebirth.
