The first time, we were born together. The humans and I, taking our first steps, molding clay with bare hands, crushing rock and ash and plants to leave our handprint, paint our history, tell a story. We looked up to the stars, saw beyond our sight, and began to imagine.

I've just sat done and I'm bone weary, literally, my bones hurt, I'm so tired, but you paw quietly at the closed glass door, and give a plaintive meow, somehow sounding as helpless as a newborn. You blink at me through the glass, pretending you don't know you could just walk around and through the living room to get to the kitchen.

The thing that lights their creative spark. The thing that sparks passion, interest veering into obsession.

It is almost pitch black in the bag. There is a tiny gap above the zipper where I can see the basement. Cold, musty, dank, quiet. They don't usually leave me down here so long. At least three winters have come and gone since I've seen the sun. I'm bare in the bag, naked. I don't mind the long rest between winters, but I'm sad to think I haven't fulfilled my purpose these last three years. Hopefully, hopefully, this year I will.

To the mother of my body, but not of my birth
As a child, I run through your woods, roots running deep, leaves crunching underfoot, birds singing happily above, hand in hand with the children of Earth. We play in your streams, catching crawfish, discovering treasure in the glittering mica. We teach each other to gently pluck the end of the honeysuckle flower. Slowly pull out a single drop of nectar and touch it to our outstretched tongues. Our entire world reflected in that tiny globe of ambrosia. I thank you for the joy of existence.

The River of Magic
The River ran backwards on the day the Queen vanished. Lux sat in their window in the highest turret of the castle. They had the best view of the surrounding rolling green hills and forests. With the wind in their hair and the sun warming their skin, it was so easy to feel at peace here, to just be.

“There was only one rule: don’t open the door. Unless you’re holding her hand,” you say to yourself quietly. The worlds, the wonders, so different, so marvelous, each accessible from the Hall of Worlds. Your teacher, Claire had started with the harmless. A green jungle with fluffy ball shaped trees, and big-eyed rainbow birds singing sweet songs. A peaceful water world, shimmering under a purple sky. A world that appeared as one big marshmallow.
