How Realism Led Me on the Path to Self-Love & Self-Care
Let me start by saying that I know that self-love and self-care just seem like two popularized hashtags overused on all social media platforms. I am honestly guilty of doing just that. But it would be remiss of me to not share how I've used these two simple concepts to alter my life for the better. Before I get there though, I have to explain exactly how I upgraded into this seemingly positive, seemingly wise, and seemingly optimized version of myself.

Sorry, Tennis Buffs, But I’m All for Naomi Osaka
I used to be an obsessive tennis fan. I grew up in the era of Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg. Tennis was always popular with fans of individual sports, as opposed to team sports, but it wasn’t until the Connors-Borg-McEnroe era that the sport really took off and exploded in the public consciousness.

Journaling
Journaling to Relieve Stress I am sure many of you have heard that journaling can relieve stress. Sometimes it feels as if you are getting something out in the open just by writing it down. When you first start journaling you just write about what happened during your day. The goal is to dig deeper and express feelings in your writing. Expressing feelings of anger, sadness and anxiety in your writing is like taking it out of your body and looking at it. It is like getting something “off your chest” without yelling it out at someone. Start slowly and you will see how this daily ritual adds to your calmness and ultimately your overall well-being.

Walk to maintain your Mental and Physical Health.
I had to make the switch from running to walking when I was in my teens because I discovered that I had an in-turning ankle which made walking painful. This means that the bone of my ankle supporting my foot is not straight, it turns in which means that the bone-structure is weak, and does not have the strength to support my foot. This can cause excruciating pain to both my foot and ankle when running, and I had to find an alternative way to maintain my cardio and fitness levels, so I chose walking.

The skill that saved me.
Reject My career as a teacher came to an end in 2013 when I failed to get the job I was doing really well, having not impressed the panel at interview as much as another candidate. This was the second time in nine years that this had happened to me. It didn't seem to count that I had helped some of the students improve their A Level resits from a grade D to a grade A, for example, or that I was popular with my classes, and that I was an excellent teacher. I was devastated; but somewhere in the back of my mind, I was also relieved.

Soldier Ants of Correction
The story I'm about to share is a complex one that started a turning point in my life and before I start, bear in mind that I was brought up in the deep villages of Enugu, Nigeria in West Africa and soups were generally spicier there. I will also invite you to have an open mind about the activities that occurred in the story and to know that I was an exceptionally stubborn child that often required drastic measures to affect correction. On that note, I will like to take you back to the beginning of 2004, the year I was all of 11 years and also the year I got it into my head to graduate from stealing pieces of meat from the pot of soup to stealing from my mother’s purse to buy things I couldn't remember today even if it could save a dying baby.

Anxiety is more than just worrying
Anxiety is more than just worrying. Anxiety is the restless nights of sleep, as you toss and turn. It is your brain never being able to shut off. It is the thoughts you over-think before bedtime and all of your worst fears become a reality in dreams and nightmares. It is waking up tired even though your day just started.
