The Taste of Connection
Eggs, flour, sugar, meat, potatoes, cold cuts, paper towels, candy, a bottle of rosé wine. It’s Friday. The day Simon allows himself to indulge. He plans to bake a cake when he gets home and enjoy the warmth from the oven while he prepares dinner in his large, bright kitchen, savoring the taste of the cool rosé.

I follow a mostly-upbeat social media platform that features millions of photos and short videos, and I spend maybe an hour a day scrolling though the pictures, reading the captions and the comments. I often find news items that aren’t reported in popular sources, which then forces me to dig up the facts and uncover hidden truths. Some of the comments are spot-on hysterical. Others, however, get trolled to death until the original poster deletes the photo. Standards, both written and unspoken, are followed, and certain original posters (OP) are famously followed because of their unique perspective on things.

While I understand that the Community has made great strides in equality and representation over the decades, I still have to argue that there are many members of the Community that don't get the same representation that everyone else does. I've been writing fanfiction for a long time. As I mentioned in my other Representation entry, I didn't grow up seeing myself represented in Media. On the rare occasion that I did see Autism, or Asexuality, represented, it was usually as a caricature, or the punchline of a joke, or a problem to be solved. Other times, as diversity became a popular thing to include, it would be shown as an excuse for poor behaviour, or, more rarely, as Inspirational(TM), to make a character more impressive for having already overcome their hurdles due to their Special Interest being seen as valuable, like Rain Man or The Good Doctor.

This subculture was a haven for those who felt ostracized, a place where they could find acceptance and community.

Mistress of the Dark, Light in my Life
There’s just something truly special about Elvira. It’s not just her iconic makeup or her infamous haunted hills or her witty quips & double entendres, no, Elvira herself feels just as familiar as Halloween or a favorite spooky movie to me. She’s become a person of comfort for me, like a beloved family member you don’t get to see often. However, everytime you see them it’s like a new magical experience that leaves your heart full. In fact, you could say ahe’s become a part of who I am. Over the years I have collected shirts and action figures, pins and posters. There’s always a little bit of the Mistress of the Dark with me somewhere in my life.
