Resignation in Color
To: A Me I Once Knew Cc: The Universe Formal Letter of Resignation Dear Me, I would like to notify you that I am resigning from my position as stone. A massive grey body lumbering above the ground; grass leeched of its chlorophyll green, withering beneath me in dark shadows cast by my mass. Golden rays of sunlight blocked from nurturing its growth. The weight of earth’s gravity resting squarely on slate shoulders has become too much to bear. My hard etched features translated into crusted scoria rock, red restless eyes glossed over by black obsidian. Found face down amidst the chaotic upheaval, I desire restoration. Head fixed in the direction of cool waters, I long contemplated this separation. Easter Island will not be my tomb. Call me Mo’ai no more.

I Am
Black is a color of acceptance. It embraces all colors of the spectrum to become one. It is dominant by nature yet passive to light. Darkness is a creation that coexist with light. It balances the Universe and world. Black has been labeled taboo yet distinctively most people feel empowered by it. Even in attire black is the go to color for professionals and when you want to feel polished; i.e the Tuxedo or sexy black dress. However, when it the color of black is applied to skin the spectrum and perception changes. Or, does it? Fear becomes an issue and always have been. We fear darkness as a child, we are taught that black is a mourning color. We are tabooed that even black cats are bad. We are then taught to embrace light and it is good. But, we are never taught that they bring balance to each other in humans and the Universe. I am a black woman was written to express the many shades of black that comes from one source. Amazingly, the world’s lightest and darkest men are both black. So, color is relatively a concept of the mind that is taught. Ironically neither black or white are truly colors but opposite foundations of all the wonderful prisms in between. Without one the other means nothing because we have to experience one to appreciate the other.
