To,

Dear Mum,

Yes… I arrived safely!

A picturesque postcard captured the

Spectacularly steep zig-zag street in San Francisco

Selection pored over… a gem unearthed from amid the gravel.

Excitement fizzes, adrenaline surges, laughter bubbles…

It’s the start of my long-awaited overseas travel!

Cramped writing smudged by the hand

One exotic stamp affixed hastily…

In the mailbox it does land.

Mother Dear waits…

Patiently.

~~~~
Why????
Just phone….
Or text… or use Internet!
No fear! The phone was too dear!
And, stretching way back into the mists of time…
Those other communication marvels weren’t invented yet!
Oft, the holiday winged more swiftly than the mail
Intrepid traveller warmly welcomed home
In time to greet the precious
Picturesque postcard.
A souvenir
Kept!
    Loved the tender feel to this - precious memories - beautifully expressed!
  • This piece of nostalgia made my heart want to fly half way around the world and see every place I’ve never seen.
    That brings back so many memories. Used to love getting and sending postcards when I was a kid. And remember my first language exchange trips to Europe when you'd arrive at your host family and be invited to make one, ultra-quick phone call to convince your own family you weren't dead!
  • This was awesomeeee! If you tweak it a little, you can enter this into the Inverse challenge as well!
    Hahaha, I loved that ending. Hope it's a true story because that's really funny!! Also don't know how my mum would survive without me being able to message her saying I arrived safely😂 Love how you encaptured the excitement of arriving ready for a holiday.
    I've always loved post cards. Too bad we don't use them more often.
    Nicely done! I have a stack of postcards that my dad brought back from a stint overseas. Only a few were written on and mailed. I don't know for sure, but I imagine the unmarked ones made it home before the ones he'd written on.
    This is a wonderful poem, Angie, like a favorite and forgotten confection from childhood. I love the visual structure of the poem as well! We have countless post cards purchased when we lived in Germany in dozens of scrapbooks. It's a fun way to remember!
    Loved it. 💕And the zig zag in SF is cool (used to go there for work frequently). Postcards in an album depict scenes sometimes better than photos so I did that for awhile. Welcome back a day before the postcard arrived.
