Such golden memories of seaside holidays…

Aunts, cousins and brothers all visited my marvellous Nana and Pop.

No time wastin’… we skipped early to the beach.

Dawdled along the shore; bought two cent lollies at the shop.

Crabs scuttled and scribbled cryptic messages on sand ‘paper’.

Aeroplane trips — floated on clouds — as we travelled solo.

Sandcastles sneakily built on rocks; destructive children sure got a shock!

Tiny Towns’ seashell doors, feathered flags and castle moats did o’erflow.

Leaping like mountain goats along a craggy headland.

Exercise galore… beach sprints before salty swims.

Sunset gilded our paradise playground… surf swept across the sand.

Sandcastles… simple or stately… survived only one single, solar spin.

A little clarification might be useful regarding the sneaky sandcastles built on rocks. Even as a child I was keen on time saving… covering a rock with sand, meant much less time, effort and sand was required. I also had a strong sense of justice. I believed you only had the right to destroy a sandcastle that you had built or with the permission of such a person. Otherwise, wear the consequences! What a sweet child!

Sandcastles are such a familiar part of childhood to so many of us, this hits like a wave of nostalgia! “Crabs scuttled and scribbled cryptic messages on sand ‘paper’!” is a wonderful line. And the idea of sandcastles not being built to last is threaded through the ending. Well done 👏

That was fun to read! 😆

  • Sincere apologies to Donna Fox: I wrote an acrostic poem about Sandcastles a couple of days after reading, enjoying and commenting on her excellent Sandcastle acrostic poem! My only defence is probable, undiagnosed dementia!!😵‍💫😬 This is the link to her excellent poem: https://shopping-feedback.today/poets/sandcastles-4d5pd01bh%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/span%3E%3C/a%3E%3C/p%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3C/div%3E%3Cdiv class="css-w4qknv-Replies">

Sounds like a fun time! Love the nostalgia seeping through each line. Also love your drastic measures of protecting your sand castles😂

  • A sweet child indeed! We would have gotten along very well for sure, lol! I loved your poem! Donna Fox also wrote an acrostic using sandcastles for Poppy's Prompts. Great minds think alike!

  • Awww, this was so good. Very creative. Loved these lines: Sunset gilded our paradise playground… surf swept across the sand. Sandcastles… simple or stately… survived only a single, solar spin <3 <3

But you are right. It is sheer vandalism otherwise. Only the builder, or the sea, can authorise the destruction of a sand castle.

Ou, this was so lovely and so clever! Also I totally agree: only the maker of the sandcastle should be allowed to destroy said castle 😂💗 Wonderful poem!!
