Perspective

Eyes of a Palestinian

Another Monday morning,

Undiscerning routines,

And this ceiling, leaves me feeling,

In need of dopamine.

-

So I depart my bedroom,

Exhumed by corporate greed,

Damn! Out of beans, no more caffeine,

Ugh! My life sucks, indeed.

-

Then I sit, for a bit, and I have to admit,

There are worse problems than, lack of java.

Imagine, living in, a nightmare, in despair,

Imagine, living in, fucking Gaza.

-

Where do I live? In a house,

Safe from bombs, safe from guns,

Where do I live? With my spouse,

And my kids, my loved ones.

-

Another Gazan child killed,

Blood instilled in the sand,

Their families huddled in rubble,

Or buried by their hands.

-

Victims of gruesome war crimes,

Made paradigms through fear,

Emaciated, dehydrated,

Ignored year after year.

-

So I cry, dry my eyes, hug my son, who's nearby,

Thanking God, we don't live, there in Gaza.

It's horrible to think how others can be living in other places around the world while we have such comfortable lives in the US (or other countries not impacted by such things directly). Definitely makes you want to hold your family a little closer.

So much hard truth in this. I mean we all have our obstacles and mountains, but for many of us, it's coffee and other less significant issues we have to deal with as opposed to dodging falling debris, bombs, shells, gunfire and terror. This was beautifully tense and sombre, Kenny. Another pristine piece of poetry from you, sir! Congrats on the Top Story - it's richly deserved!

I applaud and thank you for writing about Gaza and bringing awareness through your platform to the genocide that Gazans and Palestinians face daily at the bloody hands of Israel and the US. I do want to caution that we need to be mindful as to not turn Gaza and “over there” into another “starving kids in Africa” propaganda piece. It desensitizes us, while dehumanizing Palestinians (which is already a huge issue). We must also keep in mind that Palestinians are just as intelligent, cultured, imaginative, caring, human, as the rest of us. And they are being massacred by fascist Israel. And yes, I said FASCIST ISRAEL. And I don’t say this lightly. My family occupies those lands, is Jewish, and I have family members who survived the Jewish Holocaust (and some who didn’t). And it sickens me that they have contributed to the Palestinian Holocaust and oppression. “Never again” should apply to EVERYONE.

Sometimes, it’s good to have a little perspective on our situation and remember that others have it worse than we do. It’s also good to take a moment to remember the plight of those in other countries, whether we can help or not. Well written, and congrats on the top story.

Perspective indeed. I like how the rhymes flowed through every other line. It's like a chain with all its connected parts. A bit of self reflection. Out of caffeine and no more beans, not being as bad as living in Gaza. I like the contrast with the house compared to bombs and guns. You have your kids and spouse, not afraid whether they will live or not. 'Ignored year by year' I love that the flow just kept going, I could feel your gratitude and sadness this was outstanding Ken 🤗❤️👏🏾👌🏾

  • Our normal life is their luxury. Being able to stay alive is a luxury for them. It's so heartbreaking 🥺🥺

Well-wrought, and a perspective I often take myself. "Somewhere," I say, "there's a child defending a pile of rubble with a machine gun. My life isn't so bad."

Putting things in perspective. This needs to be stitched in our brains when ever we complain about the mundane. We have no idea, what suffering is like. Thanks for the reminder

Man! That was harsh in the right ways and opened my eyes a little wider to the situation. None of our problems compare to what's going on over there. I will continue to count my blessings and pray for relief from all the senseless evil that continues to wreak havoc. Thank you for writing this, Kenny. We can't pretend it doesn't exist. 🙏🏽
