Silence in a Call Center

The Day Everything Changed

It’s the silence I remember most,

An absence of breath,

Eerie, like the presence of ghosts,

Or a demon’s caress.

I stood from my cubicle confused,

Searching for someone, anyone,

But the room was empty and oozed,

Of heightened tension just begun.

Glancing at the screen, I saw,

Forty long minutes since my last call.

Briefly I wondered if I were dead,

Because the quiet was so widespread.

Then a flicker, a colorful flash,

Painted the wall in rainbow hues.

Quick as a startled deer, I dashed,

Toward this illuminating clue.

And there they were, in another room,

Coworkers watching with brows furrowed

Anderson Cooper on the news,

Reporting the story that changed the world.

Behind him, captured in the camera frame,

Stood the Towers, wreathed in flame.

I like that there wasn't just silence, but also the absence of breath. Starting to sound more like a demons caress. When I read from 'confused' to 'room' it was such a nice entanglement of rhyme. 'Behind him, captured in the camera frame, stood the towers, wreathed in flame.' this is one of my favourite lines. So close to something so scary, something that none of us will ever forget. This was so well done. Walking us through the realisation of things in that call centre. It must've been so traumatising to be this close when it all happened. 🤗❤️

My son's friend was asking about that day yesterday. What we remembered. And I remember the world stopping.

Kenny, you captured the feeling and emotions of that day so wonderfully. It was like I was reliving it, which I hope will never happen

The way you build from eerie office silence to that world-changing moment gave me goosebumps. I still remember where I was when I heard the news.

  • The impact of this will always hit me so hard 🥺❤️
