“haiku by classical Japanese poets, such as Matsuo Bashō, also deviate from the 17-on pattern and sometimes do not contain a kireji. Similar poems that do not adhere to these rules are generally classified as senryū.“. <- Mine doesn’t contain a kireji, and I also intended it as a traditional haiku. 🤔

… a cutting word to redirect it? Hmmm I’ll have to research more.

My haiku is three lines with 17 syllables (5-7-5), about my Bunny (nature, not human), and is serious. I believe it responds to the definition of what a haiku is. 🙂🐰 I did my research before writing it. But I’d like to hear your opinion about it.

  • Clearly way too complex for me 🥺.

Good point you make there between the two styles.

I agree with Paul, that the distinction is many times lost in English, especially when it comes to the cutting word. Great verse, Mike!

Hats of to those who can keep up with math + words...tried it, but so complicated for me. But, I LOVE the simplicity amidst the complexities in the message AND the other way around, too. This was great :)

So glad you made this distinction. I share this concern for getting it right. I think Matthew Fromm is quite strong about it too. I always mark my scratches in my mind stuff as senryu because they are not about seasons and about human nature related things. And also, cutting words are hard to apply because in the most direct translation from the Japanese to English...I believe I read that there is no direct word that can fill that space in in English. It's definitely more of a minefield than people perhaps consider. Also, what about ananda11's surreal comment? lol.

  • You mean a Haiku can be a Senryu but a Senryu cannot be a Haiku?
