humanity
Isn't it ironic that the very best of humanity is seen through the love and empathy we show to our pets?
A Dog Sitter's Story

I was once given this visual during a cord cutting meditation. Imagine you are holding a bundle of helium balloons. Each balloon representing someone in your life you have difficulty letting go. One by one, you focus on each person and then when you are ready, release the balloon from your hand and that person from your heart. As I closed my eyes, people I had loved and lost swayed above me. I held their face in my mind and felt the irrational unwavering loyalty I still held for them pierce my heart. My hands painfully gripped the strings of the balloons tight, unable to release them. Then, when I finally did, hot panic rushed to my face and anxiety filled my chest.

If I were to tell my friends that I’m entering a writing contest about a topic that’s the dearest to my heart, they wouldn’t have to venture a second guess. They’d know that it is about animals. Writing a long essay about my pets would be quite a chaotic process, for I find it quite difficult to put all my thoughts, feelings and experiences about my furry friends in a certain mould of words. However, I can say with certain confidence that the stories of my unbelievably cute and therapeutic pets will help the reader overlook my amateur writing!

"Not all Those Who Wander are Lost." -C.S. Lewis I guess you could say I have always been a stray magnet. Even as a very young child I remember feeling an odd, soulful connection to the many homeless wanderers that somehow managed to find me wherever I happened to be. On the swing set in my yard, playing in the wooded area behind our house or just walking home from school, no place was immune to what I believed to be my ability to attract animals in need.
