humanity
Isn't it ironic that the very best of humanity is seen through the love and empathy we show to our pets?
An Important Reminder from My Dog to Me… and to You
It was another typical night bringing my dog out to relieve herself just before we all sat down to relax and watch T.V. I was not in the best of moods as my obsessive mind cycled through past, present, and future anxieties of life. It was also cold, and I just wanted her to do her business as quickly as possible. Thank god for the leash attached to my hand because without it, I would have forgotten all about my beautiful little potato sniffing the grass for the best area to mark her territory. That’s how lost in my head I was.

To the uncaring
I don’t remember the last time I saw Shelly, but I have many other memories of her, both good and bad. She was half beagle half golden retriever, and her golden brown coat glowed promising an innocence that did not align with her personality. It was beyond mischief, but a desperate and savage will to survive. I remember hearing that she was the runt of a pack of six or seven, which made sense because she was constantly trying to prove herself amongst the ranks of our family. She would try to push around my brother and I, but we were able to outdo her when we worked together. There’s a distinct memory of my little sister crying in the corner while the dog was trying to bully her out of her territory. She was like that with territory, even when she was trained she would hold in her urine until she got home to remind us that she lived here too, and my father reprimanded her to remind her that he knows that already.

They Rescued Me
I can't remember a time as a child when my family didn't have a dog. Sometimes more than one. The companionship one gets from a dog is something beyond compare. In our home I was taught to love our animals, that I had a responsibility to them; they didn't choose us, we chose them. This kind of lesson is one that is priceless and everlasting. After my parents divorced my family no longer had a pet dog, mostly because my stepfather liked cats so that's what we had.

Knight in Shining Armor
Being a greyhound mom for over a decade, I have a lot of “trigger” moments. On Facebook, people always share stories that trigger memories of my hounds. Some of the memories are hilarious, some are a bit bittersweet. This story is more than a little bittersweet.

Coco—The Prescription Puppy
Through tear-filled eyes, I pleaded with the pediatrician: “Doctor, what can I do to help my little boy? Every single time L.J. sees a dog, he instantly becomes SO terrified, the blood rushes out of his face, he bursts into screaming tears, and he scrambles up me; desperately clinging to my neck.”

Von Bricklebrow House
Von Bricklebrow House The dog stopped running when he got to the fountain in the middle of the park. By stopped running, it didn’t mean he stopped moving. Now, he was swimming in the fountain, his big, hairy, black, furry body leaving a muddy trail in the water.
