Unfolding Wings: A Story of Growth

Rediscovering Joy in Small Steps Toward Transformation.

By Essa Joof Published about a year ago 4 min read

I used to believe that change was something that happened to other people—people who had a clear vision, who knew exactly what they wanted from life. They were the ones who broke free, who transformed into something greater. I admired them from afar but assumed that kind of growth wasn’t for me. For years, I settled into my comfortable routine, ignoring the quiet, persistent voice inside me that kept asking, “Is this it?”

The Comfortable Cage

Life was predictable, safe, and, frankly, a little boring. I worked a steady job, had the same friends I’d known for years, and spent my weekends binge-watching shows or scrolling through social media. Don’t get me wrong—it wasn’t bad. But there was a creeping sense of dissatisfaction. It was subtle, almost like background noise, but it grew louder every time I let my mind wander.

I didn’t hate my life, but something was missing. It felt like I was watching it from the outside, waiting for something—anything—to spark a change. I was stuck in a comfortable cage, where everything was fine but nothing felt alive.

The Invitation to Change

One evening, while going through my usual routine of checking emails and browsing through social media, I came across an old high school friend’s post. She had quit her job, packed her bags, and moved to a small town by the ocean to pursue her dream of opening a bakery. The look of joy on her face, standing in front of her new storefront, hit me harder than I expected.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it. How did she do it? How did she gather the courage to leave behind a stable life and chase something uncertain? The more I thought about her story, the more it ignited something in me. It wasn’t about the bakery or the new location—it was the leap of faith she had taken. It was the act of stepping into the unknown and trusting herself enough to pursue her passion.

That night, I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, and for the first time in a long time, I asked myself: “What do I really want?”

The First Step

The truth was, I didn’t know. I had spent so many years following the path I thought I was supposed to, that I hadn’t stopped to think about what I actually wanted for myself. So, I decided to take a small step. I started journaling—not for anyone else, just for me. Every morning, I would write down whatever thoughts or feelings came to mind.

At first, it felt awkward. I wasn’t used to being so honest with myself. But over time, the words started to flow. I wrote about my fears, my dreams, my regrets, and my hopes. Slowly, the fog began to lift, and I started to see the outlines of the life I wanted.

The thing that surprised me the most was that the change didn’t have to be huge. I didn’t need to quit my job or move to a new city. I realized that personal growth could start small, with simple changes to my mindset, habits, and daily routine.

Stepping Out of the Cage

One of the first things I did was to challenge my daily habits. I started by signing up for a weekly art class. I had always loved to draw when I was younger, but I had pushed that passion aside as I got older, convincing myself that it was impractical. But now, with a fresh perspective, I decided to reclaim that joy.

Walking into that art class for the first time was nerve-wracking. I didn’t know anyone, and I wasn’t sure if I still “had it.” But as I dipped my brush into the paint and made the first stroke on the canvas, something clicked. I wasn’t there to impress anyone or to master a skill—I was there to reconnect with a part of myself I had forgotten.

That class became my weekly sanctuary. It was a space where I could let go of the perfectionism and pressure that had governed my life for so long. I allowed myself to make mistakes, to experiment, and to have fun. It was the first time in years that I felt like I was truly growing—growing into a person I actually liked.

The Ripple Effect

That one small change had a ripple effect on my life. I became more open to new experiences and started saying “yes” to things that scared me. I reconnected with old friends, started reading books on personal development, and even began meditating—a practice I had always dismissed as “not for me.”

I didn’t transform overnight, but with each new experience, I felt myself shedding the layers of self-doubt and fear that had been holding me back. I wasn’t waiting for the “right time” to grow anymore. I was taking control of my own growth, creating a life that felt meaningful to me, not based on anyone else’s expectations.

The Unfolding

Today, I’m still on that journey. Personal growth isn’t a finish line you cross—it’s a process of constant unfolding. And with every step I take, I learn more about who I am and who I want to become. What I’ve realized is that growth doesn’t always have to be about dramatic change. Sometimes, it’s about making small, intentional choices that bring you closer to the person you truly are.

The truth is, we all have the capacity to grow. We don’t have to wait for permission or for the perfect circumstances. Growth begins the moment you decide to look within and ask yourself, “What do I really want?”

So, if you’re feeling stuck or unsure of what comes next, take a step—any step, no matter how small. Reclaim an old passion, try something new, or simply start being more honest with yourself. Personal growth isn’t about becoming someone else; it’s about uncovering who you’ve always been. And once you start unfolding your wings, you’ll realize that you were never truly stuck. You were just waiting for the courage to fly.
