Triumph Over Adversity
Exactly How Oprah Winfrey Became a Global Icon
The Oprah Winfrey is not only a biography of a billionaire media mogul, but a text on the power of resilience to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.2+1 her story is a lesson to any person who may be going through seemingly impossible times.
A Childhood Forged in Fire
Born out of wedlock in rural Mississippi in 1954, Oprah Gail Winfrey has experienced a life of abject poverty, so severe that the would-be fashion designer infamously employed potato sacks as dresses, to the disdain of other children.4 Yet as degrading as the material deprivation was, it was also not all of it.+1

During her life of living with different family members in Milwaukee and Tennessee, she had endured years of atrocious sexual abuse and neglect, which for many would have been the final destination; however, to Oprah it was the driving factor to a radical devotion to self-education and seeking a way out. +1
The Turning point: Discipline and Discovery.
When Oprah moved in to live with her father Vernon Winfrey in Nashville, her life path changed because he gave her the structure she lacked requiring academic excellence and strict reading schedule which enabled her innate talent of oration to thrive.
Oprah became the youngest and the first Black female news anchor at WLAC-TV.9 in Nashville at the age of 19, but this objectivity of news reporting seemed like a prison.10 She was often accused of being too emotional or taking too much interest in the stories she was covering.11 This weakness, her profound sympathy, would later become her most significant working strength.12+3
Redefining the Talk Show
Oprah relocated to Chicago in 1984 to host a low-rated morning talk show known as AM Chicago.13 Within months, she was not only able to improve the ratings, she took over the market. In 1986, the show changed its name to The Oprah Winfrey Show and became nationally syndicated.14+1
The difference was that Oprah never tried to dwell on the tabloid sensationality that was the hallmark of 80s daytime television.15 Oprah created a radical sense of intimacy with millions of audiences by not only speaking frankly about her own struggles with weight, abuse, and self-esteem, but also by addressing her vulnerability as a tool to connect with people.1718+3
Creating an Empire of Empowerment.
Oprah not only succeeded in a cultural but also in a structural manner. She realized at a young age that in order to make a permanent impact, she had to possess her story.
She started Harpo productions becoming the first black woman to own her production company.19
She created Oprah’s Book Club in 1996 which is a one-woman initiative that has seen her bring back the publishing industry by making millions of people pick up a book.20
She also became an architect of the media in 2011, switching her daily talk show to start OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network).21
She also made her mark in the film industry (she received an Academy Award nomination in The Color Purple and in the halls of government as she lobbied the National Child Protection Act of 1993, which better protects children against abuse).22
Legacy: The Global Icon
Nowadays, Oprah Winfrey is ranked among the most prominent philanthropists in American history who gave away hundreds of millions of dollars to education, including establishing the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.23

The life of Oprah teaches us that your past does not necessarily determine your future.24 She used her suffering to become a source of wisdom and teach the world that the success of any kind of person greatly depends on the extent to which he or she has suffered. Not only did she survive her story but she has changed the story of the world.
