Many of us are currently feeling nostalgic for summertimes past -- ones that weren’t so socially-distanced. We’ve entered into uncharted territory recently, both as a global population and as individuals. The last few months have forced us to pull back the curtain, and confront issues that are uncomfortable and painful. We’ve been faced with a spectrum of emotions, often grappling with feelings of loneliness and helplessness. However, despite the tragedy and loss our world has endured, the last few months have also brought unexpected gifts, like self-reflection, gratitude and kindness. There will still be some of my favorite summer staples (as pictured - hellllooo rosé), but this time around, my summer plans look a little different, because I’ve found there are parts of “life during lockdown” that I feel are definitely worth preserving.
Self-Love: I’ve found that, to be the best version of myself for my family, friends, and community, I need to start by showing myself some kindness. After all, I’m no use to others if I’m burnt out and miserable. Prior to quarantine, my self-worth was often contingent on productivity. How I felt about myself was dependent on how many boxes I was able to check off the to-do list, how packed my schedule was, and how many workouts I was able to squeeze in that week. With stay-at-home orders in place, I’ve had the privilege of being able to slow down and self-reflect. I’ve integrated meditation, solo walks, and journaling into my daily routine - all habits I’ve told myself time and time again that I would start, but never made a priority. By allowing myself these small daily kindnesses, I’ve become more centered and aware, enabling me to become a more attentive friend, a more loving daughter, and a more involved citizen.
Love for My Planet: Summer lovin’ is something that isn’t just reserved for people. It’s also important to remember to show our planet some kindness, too. This summer, I want to take more time to connect with the earth, by spending more time appreciating nature and learning more about how I can become a more conscious consumer in my own day-to-day life. Whether it’s learning about composting, shopping sustainable brands, or swapping at-home products for nontoxic and environmentally-friendly versions, there are a few small steps I intend to take in order to show our world the love it deserves.
Little Acts of Kindnesses: The large BBQs and summer soirees may be less frequent this summer, as many people continue to social distance and spend more time at home, but it's still a perfect time to get creative with how we spread good energy. Write the handwritten letter to grandma. Make that donation. Support a local business. Leave that bottle of wine on your neighbor’s doorstep, just because. I’m challenging myself (and you) to do something kind each and every day this summer, not for a pat on the back or a thumbs up on social media, but simply because you can bring joy to someone else's life, or lessen your own carbon footprint. Little acts of kindness can definitely add up, but even more importantly, they can have a powerful ripple effect.
There comes a time during quarantine when you’ve baked your last banana bread and grow tired of nightly Netflix binges. This summer is an opportunity to come together (albeit virtually for many) and be agents of change through kindness and love. After all, what if each person took the time they usually spend on their daily commute, and dedicated it instead to acts of service and compassion?
Well, that would turn into the most profound Summer Bucket list of them all.
