The Day I Almost Gave Up — and What Happened When I Didn’t

A True Story of Hitting Rock Bottom and Climbing Out Stronger

By Hossain Uddin AhamadPublished 9 months ago 2 min read

We don’t always talk about the days we break. The days we stare at the wall and wonder how we’re going to keep going. But sometimes, those days become the turning point we never saw coming.

Let me take you back.

A Cracked Morning

It started like any other Thursday. My alarm buzzed at 6:00 a.m., but I didn’t move. I stared at the ceiling, hollow. My inbox was full, rent was due, and my bank balance couldn’t cover a good cup of coffee.

I’d been chasing dreams for years. Writing, freelancing, side hustling — all in pursuit of something I couldn’t quite name. But after so many failed pitches, ghosted clients, and nights staring at the blinking cursor on my laptop, I began to ask the question that eats creatives alive: Is it time to quit?

I dragged myself out of bed, walked to the mirror, and didn’t recognize who I saw. Not because I looked different — but because the fire in my eyes was gone.

A Stranger’s Words

That afternoon, I took a walk, mostly to clear my head and get away from the noise inside it. I stopped at a small bookstore — the kind you’d never notice unless you were looking to disappear. I wasn’t expecting anything. I just needed quiet.

I picked up a book on the clearance rack, opened it to a random page, and read a highlighted sentence:

“Sometimes, the last key on the ring is the one that opens the door.”

I don’t know why, but those words hit me hard. Like the universe had paused to whisper, not yet. Maybe I didn’t need a full plan, or perfect timing, or viral success. Maybe I just needed to take one more step.

What Happened Next

That night, I opened my laptop and wrote a story I was scared to write. Raw, messy, personal. I submitted it to a site I’d been rejected from four times before. I told myself, “This one’s for me. Not for the likes, not for the money. Just for the fact that I tried.”

Three days later, I got an email with the subject line: “We loved your piece.”

It didn’t change everything overnight. I didn’t wake up a viral star or millionaire. But it was a crack of light through the concrete — enough to breathe again. Enough to believe.

Why I’m Telling You This

Because maybe you’re on that kind of day right now. Maybe you’re staring at a life that doesn’t look how you hoped. Maybe you’re tired. Burnt out. Disappointed.

And if you are, I want you to know: Don’t give up today.

Not because it’s going to magically get easier tomorrow, but because the moment you almost quit… might be the moment right before the break comes through.

We talk about success like it’s this big leap. But most of the time, it’s a series of very quiet decisions to keep going when it’s hard.

The Final Thought

Here’s what I’ve learned since that day:

  • You don’t need to be the best. You just need to be brave.
  • Nobody else sees your effort the way you do — but that doesn’t mean it’s worthless.
  • The worst day doesn’t get to decide the rest of your story.

So if you're still reading this and you're close to the edge — hold on. The next chapter is still being written.

You’re not finished yet.
