The Jump
There is an excess of inspirational quotes out there. Literal thousands encouraging you to just go with it; to take the plunge, trust in the process, trust in yourself and that by doing so, you will succeed. There is nothing wrong with that however, they are only that. A collection of powerful words, sayings, mottos and word plays. They can be used in great ways, helping to gently coax a person out of their comfort zones (which I think is the real ‘C’ word these days) so that they may experience the richness the world has to offer. For me, personally, I try to live my life guided by such things yet I learned the hard way that gentle coaxing was not enough.

Mountains or Molehills?
Today, our writing group met to write...epic fail! We did zero writing. Haha, I’m making up for it with rambling, essay form, testimony. Who is it for anyway?!? Myself, mostly, so let me announce my self-centeredness and get that out of the way. Moreover, let me respond further to my rhetorical question; it's for no one and everyone.

A Baton Passed
The money wasn't going to change his life. Nor did he need it to. In the years before his Uncle's unanticipated passing, he had remained financially comfortable. Some might even say prosperous. To many, his life would be seen as well-off, beyond suitable--enough. And they would be right. He was okay. Happy. Content. And though he was of course grateful for the benefaction from his late relative, he would gladly pay $20,000 of his own to have his Uncle back. Even just for one last story.

Lucky Jezza
Lucky Jezza Jeremy had been to school at Eton, and then got a 3rd from Oxford. Perhaps it was attention deficit disorder, or his heavy drinking but, despite his background, he hadn’t made much of his life. He preferred instead to play the geezer, called himself Jezza and all his work colleagues ‘mate’. Jezza was a down-with-the-people kind of guy.

Be Careful What You Wish For
He stormed out of the meeting, more offended, than he was angry. He knew this day was coming; the pressure at work had been building for months, the rock that was his conviction had finally run up against the hard place of company policy, and being in the middle was no place for someone like A. Quinn Treverrow.

Written in the Stars
After spending a whole year feeling stuck in one place I decided to search for more. I never thought that meant I would find something so physical and so soon. I have never been into planning my days, but one surprisingly productive afternoon I had the time and the motivation to be even more productive. My new roller skates I had dreamed about for two years just came in the mail so I decided to break them in by going to the parking deck with the best view of my city. It was there that I found something that would change my destiny forever. After parking and building up the courage to skate out of my front seat, some movement across the lot startled me. A bright orange cat waltzing out of a bag of trash like it just had the best meal of its 9th life. The cat was what that caught my eye, but it was something else that caught my attention. A little black book with “the stars” written in a darker black ink on the front. My first thought was “what is this” and my second was “i have to have it”. After picking it up and very minimal investigation I came to the conclusion that it was supposed to be thrown in the dumpster it sat next to, but never made it. I decided to keep it. This was a decision I would later thank myself for.

A Dream Realized
Hugh was standing there looking out the window from the 25th floor a view that almost every new employee had looked out and exclaimed how great the view was and how much they were looking forward to working there, seeing the London skyline as it spread out from the Thames. They all thought it was great for the first month, until their soul started slipping away into those rectangular vortices filled with spreadsheets, charts and e-mails that worked to slowly replace the dreams and goals that once had filled them.

More Than Black-Eyed Peas
“I woke up today, so I must have a purpose.” My friend told me these words one time. So simple, yet it makes so much sense. I have had several major life transitions. Before each transition, I had one major question: What was the purpose of the years that just passed? What do I have to show for what I have just come through? Sometimes I have no answer. Since then, probably once a week, I reevaluate if I am living life on purpose or living it passively. While many people spend the end of the year making resolutions for the year to come, I tend to reflect on the year that has passed to see how I have lived. There is another habit I have begun at the turn of the year.
