The Countdown
Astrid walked toward the isolated bookshelf on the wall. It was oddly distanced from the other collection of notebooks and journals. Bookstores would usually locate these shelves adjacent to each other for easy navigation, but there were quite a few steps between this one and another. Other shoppers didn't even seem to notice this dim corner, and Astrid would have missed it too without the flickering light above. Astrid found herself stepping away from the traffic of the shop as she reached the tall brown shelf placed against the dark green wall. It was stocked solely with duplicates of a small black notebook. Though she found the monopoly unusual, Astrid still appreciated the soft leathery feel at her fingertip. Astrid looked for a barcode or a price sticker but only found five digits embossed in the center both front and back: 20000. If it were meant to indicate the current year, they were horribly off. Astrid dismissed it as a bad copy and grabbed a different one. Same embossing was on the back. She reached for another. Same thing. Now Astrid wondered if this was an intentional design or a terrible printing mistake. Having lost the desire to purchase, she began to put the journal back. As it left her hand, Astrid felt chills going down her spine. She instantly realized something was different, perhaps even wrong. The bustle and the noise had stopped completely. Silence fell over the entire store, and Astrid did not dare turn around. Her instincts were screaming at her to pick up the book. She slowly placed her hand on the black cover, and air began to move again. White noise returned, and Astrid whipped her entire body around. No one was looking at her. Nobody was paying any attention to her. Everyone was going about their day. I... must be really tired, she thought. I must be.

Faith
I knelt and took a long devastating breath. I held on to the dirt in my palm for as long as I possibly could. Amongst the soil were a few pebbles as well, one which stood out in particular. I gazed at it for a minute and finally drew my attention away from it. I had not gripped onto soil like this since I was a kid, so the texture was a little uneasy to my hand. I felt incredibly lost. I couldn't help the various thoughts and emotions that crossed paths inside of my head and heart. The moment was undoubtedly overwhelming. Regardless of how much of a burden these feelings were, they all felt right at the moment. I stood up and stared one last time at the roses that lay across. Finally, I released the dirt. I watched it drop over the flowers as it spread across the coffin. I knew that today was going to be a day that I would never forget.

The Little Black Book
It started out like any other ordinary day for 27 year old Holly Jamison. Being a single mom of a rambunctious 4 year son was challenging enough but she was also in her last semester of nursing school which made her stress levels sky high. She always woke up at 5:00 am to get in a few hours of studying for weekly exams before her son Ryder woke up. Once he was up she had to do her motherly duties to get him and her out the door in enough time to drop him off at her mom’s house and be at school on time. One missed class or clinical meant she would be dropped from the program and she would have to start all over in order to get selected for the nursing program again.

Turning Pages to a Dream
Turning Pages to a Dream Hanzila excitedly sat up in bed and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. Today was about to be one of the most pivotal moments in her life. Immediately Hanzila walked over to her small desk, eagerly thrusting her black notebook open and jotted down the date in the upper-righthand corner, "August 6th, 2010." She writes, "Dear Diary... Today is the day that I make my escape to a happier life!"

SOME PEOPLE ARE LUCKY
THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO ARE LUCKY By Devin Wilson There are some people who are lucky, they have a plan, they know exactly what they are going to do with themselves. But most of us have no idea, merely coasting through life, never realizing our goals. However, there are a few of us who get lucky, find our niche so to speak. For years it felt as if success was just out of my reach, as if something was holding me back, but I couldn’t figure out what. And when I finally did, the irony was almost heart breaking.

Money
I am a traveling educator/garbage artist/humanitarian. I have traveled the nation researching homelessness and pollution, documenting and filming the harsh realities and striving to implement change by educating homeless how to make things they can use and sell out of “trash”. Our wildlife eats our garbage, we have an obscene amount of people on the streets and our world is sick because of it.

Old Money
Urgency, that is the spirit our society worships. To be the center of the flipping universe, there is pressure on the importance of urgency. “I need my money now!” Shrieking at the top of your lungs when your rent is due is your problem, not mine. That is what one perceives in a human transaction with customer service: the disrespect, the lack of empathy. One would think that, but they are wrong. We do care on the other side, but your money is my money too. I got bills just like you, and if the man says these are the rules. Your money is mine. Mine to purchase my future children’s healthcare. Mine to put food on the table. Mine. If you want your money, read the terms and conditions. It does not matter the transaction. Whether commerce, travel, or luxury. Find the print that keeps your money your money before it becomes mine.

Rose of Happenstance
Rose had grown used to little synchronicities happening, when she pulled into the assigned parking spot of her new apartment, and a radio advertisement screamed, “YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACE!”. She chuckled a bit, thinking to herself, “well there’s a good sign!”.
