I Quit My Job to Start an Online Business in Afghanistan

Changed My Life Forever

By Keramatullah WardakPublished 8 months ago 4 min read

In a world where stability often outweighs ambition, I made a different choice.

I left behind a secure job; the kind of job many people dream of in Afghanistan to chase a dream that many thought was unrealistic. But I wasn't chasing fantasy. I was chasing freedom, purpose, and potential.

Today, I’m the founder of Kabul Mart, a rising eCommerce brand that imports quality home appliances, beauty products, and essential goods from China, selling them online across Afghanistan. More than that, I run an online educational center in Kabul, where I teach young Afghans how to earn online through digital skills and entrepreneurship.

This is the story of how I walked away from the “safe path” — and found something far more meaningful.

Why I Left My Job

Leaving a job in Afghanistan isn’t a small decision. It’s a decision wrapped in risk. A job means survival, dignity, and responsibility — especially when your family depends on you.But I reached a breaking point.

Each day felt the same. I knew I had more to offer — more ideas, more energy, more vision — but my job didn't allow me to grow. I was trading time for money with no room to breathe. It wasn’t that I hated working. I hated working without purpose.

That frustration slowly turned into a new obsession: starting my own business online. I began learning about digital marketing, importing goods, and eCommerce models from around the world. I watched videos at night, joined free webinars, and read every guide I could find. Slowly, a plan formed — and Kabul Mart was born.

The Rise of Kabul Mart: Bringing China to Afghan Doorsteps

I launched Kabul Mart to make essential products accessible to Afghans through online platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

I focused on three things:

Products people actually needed

Reasonable prices

Trustworthy service

By importing high-demand items like home appliances, kitchen gadgets, and beauty products from China, I filled a gap that many local stores could not. And by using digital marketing, I reached people where they spend their time: online.

The first sale felt like magic — not because of the money, but because it proved this crazy idea could work.

Why Digital Marketing Was My Weapon of Choice

In a country where many people don’t believe in online shopping, I had to build trust. That’s where digital marketing came in. I used:

Facebook ads with real customer reviews

Product demonstration videos

Stories and posts that answered questions

Cash-on-delivery (COD) to remove fear

Each step was focused on trust and value — the two ingredients for long-term business in Afghanistan.

As sales grew, so did the vision. I realized that I didn’t just want to build a business. I wanted to build a movement.

Teaching Others: Launching an Online Educational Center in Kabul

The more success Kabul Mart saw, the more messages I received from people asking, “How can I do the same?”

That’s when I took the next step.

I founded an Online Educational Center in Kabul dedicated to teaching young Afghans how to earn online — even without investment. I now help students learn:

Digital Marketing

Freelancing (Upwork, Fiverr, Freelancer, Vocal Media...)

Social Media Management

eCommerce and Dropshipping

Basic Graphic Design and Content Creation

I’ve seen students go from unemployed to making $300–$1000+ per month just by applying what they learned — without leaving the country.

In a place where opportunities are scarce, this is more than education. It’s economic freedom.

Challenges I Faced (And How I Overcame Them)

Success didn’t come easy. Here’s what I struggled with:

Doubt from others: People told me I was wasting time.

Import complications: Customs and logistics from China can be tricky.

Trust issues: Many Afghans fear online scams.

Financial risk: I used my savings to start; it was all or nothing.

But I kept going. Why?

Because impact matters more than comfort. Every product delivered. Every student trained. Every young Afghan who believes, “If he did it, maybe I can too” — makes the journey worth it.

Advice for Anyone Wanting to Start

If you're reading this and feel stuck in a job or don’t know where to start — listen closely:

You don’t need perfect timing. You need courage and consistency.

Here’s what I’d recommend:

Learn first: Don’t jump without knowledge. YouTube, Udemy, Coursera — these are your new classrooms.

Start small: Begin with one product or one service.

Use social media: Your audience is already online. Find them.

Focus on value, not just money: Solve a problem, and people will pay.

Help others rise with you: True success is shared.

The Future of Kabul Mart & My Dream for Afghanistan

Kabul Mart is growing; not just in sales, but in purpose. I see it as more than a business. It’s a symbol that Afghanistan can join the digital economy, despite challenges.

My goal is to expand our services across all provinces, create delivery jobs for locals, and build more educational centers where youth can learn, earn, and lead.

We don’t need to wait for foreign aid or perfect governments. The tools for change are already in our hands — quite literally, in our smartphones.

Conclusion

I quit my job to follow a dream. Today, that dream has become a reality — and a lifeline for others. Through Kabul Mart, and my Online Educational Center in Kabul, I’m building something that I hope will inspire a generation. This story isn’t about me. It’s about what’s possible, even in the most unexpected places.

If you’re ready to believe in yourself, work hard, and use the power of the internet, you can build something that matters. And maybe, just maybe, one day, you’ll write your own story — just like this one.
