Health and Fitness: Are smoothies a good way to lose weight?

Smoothies are good choice to lose weight

By SaraPublished 3 years ago 7 min read

Smoothies are really good for your health. It contains many nutrients like fibre, protein, iron, etc. It is a great short way of weight loss tool. You can include it in your diet for maintaining your fitness.

While they’re no breakfast option, smoothies make a great on-the-go, mid-day treat. But many smoothies on the market are incredibly high in calories, fat, and sugar, and not that filling, especially after a high-calorie snack.

So, are smoothies a good way to lose weight? Read our tips for what makes a healthy, low-calorie, and low-fat smoothie, and enjoy your treat!

Why are smoothies such a hit?

For one, they make a delicious way to fuel up while maintaining weight loss. They’re often blended with low-fat or non-fat options, and they’re filling enough to be satisfying without making you feel as though you’re depriving yourself.

Although the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends 25 to 38 grams of fiber a day, the average American is only taking in about 16 grams a day. This is a big deal, as poor fiber intake is linked not only to poor digestion but also to chronic illnesses like type II diabetes and heart disease.

Many of them are blended with protein, fruits, and/or vegetables, which give you a powerful fuel boost. There are countless varieties of “smoothies” available these days—all of which make weight loss easier.

Why can’t they be a good weight loss option?

Smoothies are high in calories, fat, and sugar, and many of them have as much as one-third of your daily carb intake in them. While some healthy options are blended with whey protein, milk, or protein powder, most brands that advertise smoothies as weight-loss diet plans don’t add low-calorie ingredients.

Benefits of Water

So, they’re often not really low-calorie or low-fat, and they’re more like snacks than they are anything else. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a tasty treat in between meals!

A simple swap

A basic smoothie with protein powder, fruits, and low-fat milk or yogurt can help you make smoothies a part of your weight loss plan. Add a few frozen berries for some extra flavour, or substitute non-fat Greek yogurt for whole milk for a delicious mid-day treat.

However, it is important to remember that the nutritional value of a smoothie is determined by what ingredients are used. Some recipes include excessive amounts of added or natural sugar that can contribute to dental caries (also known as cavities), diabetes, and obesity (Palacios et al., 2009).

Further, liquid (or semi-liquid) calories are less filling, which may lead to increased calorie consumption (Flood-Obbagy & Rolls, 2009).

Experiment with ingredients to find what you like—and make it low in calories, sugar, fat, and (for most) carbs.

Healthy smoothie benefits

While they’re often high in calories, fat, and sugar, you can enjoy smoothies that are low in these nutrients as part of a healthy weight-loss diet plan.

There is also concern that the consumption of smoothies may contribute to obesity. This is because liquid (or semi-liquid) foods do not satisfy hunger and appetite as well, or as long, as solid food (Maurao et al., 2007; FloodObbagy & Rolls, 2009).

Here’s what you can expect from your mid-day smoothies:

A balanced meal in a glass. Smoothies can be part of a healthy diet, and they can be part of a healthy lifestyle. They make a great mid-day snack or dessert, and you can enjoy the fruit flavor without the sugar and fat you’d find in a sweet drink.

Nutrition. A smoothie is a wonderful way to get some vitamin-packed fruit in your system. It’s also a great source of fiber. Fruits and veggies are packed with nutrients, and you can get a boost of protein and other good stuff.

Some smoothies even contain an ounce of protein or more, so they’re a good source of protein for those who need it.

Protein. Smoothies are a good way to get protein in. Most smoothies are packed with protein, whether it’s whey protein, Greek yogurt, milk, or other ingredients.

Not all smoothies are low in fat, but most contain a moderate amount of fat (milk is usually lower in fat than regular yogurt), and you can add your favorite dairy product to boost the flavor.

Low-calorie. There are a number of healthy smoothie options. Adding skim or low-fat milk or yogurt to the fruit and vegetables in a smoothie can help you make the smoothie portion as healthy as the whole thing.

Weight loss plan

While smoothies are a great way to snack and fuel up between meals, they’re not a good substitute for a meal. They’re packed with calories, fat, and sugar—not exactly the kind of healthy snacks that help you to lose weight.

High protein smoothies or protein shakes are most commonly used by bodybuilders and athletes, but they can also be beneficial to people suffering from protein deficiency, pregnant women, and older adults (Brown & Isaacs, 2011).

The Ultimate Keto Meal Plan

Here are some ways to use your favorite healthy smoothie options as part of a weight loss plan:

• Add one healthy smoothie to your favorite weight-loss diet plan.

• Just make sure that your total number of daily calories isn’t more than 1,500.

• And you may want to avoid smoothies with dairy, such as milk and Greek yogurt, for a couple of reasons.

• The milk and yogurt in smoothies contain a lot of calories, and they contain no protein.

Nutrition Fat Loss Guide

• Plus, the sugar in milk and yogurt can cause an insulin spike.

Try a smoothie as a snack. Add an extra smoothie to your diet to boost your energy and keep you going throughout the day.

• If you don’t have your favorite smoothie in your refrigerator or pantry, there are a few things you can do to help you make a smoothie at home:

• buy frozen, sliced bananas, buy berries, and frozen grapes or add a few tablespoons of non-fat Greek yogurt to your blender.

• Add low-calorie ingredients such as skim or low-fat milk or yogurt to your favorite flavor and add a few tablespoons of protein powder.

• Add non-fat vanilla ice cream to make a dessert.

Use frozen fruit in place of fresh fruit

Frozen fruit adds instant energy and a good amount of fiber to smoothies and to other recipes. Add ¼ cup frozen fruit to a 1-cup batch of cooked cereal for a tasty fiber-rich treat.

Add a healthy protein shake

Protein shakes add extra energy, nutrients, and protein to your diet, and they make an excellent post-workout or post-workout snack.

They’re ideal to enjoy in the middle of the day if you’re doing intense cardio or other exercises that make you need a lot of fuel.

Make a breakfast smoothie

There are lots of good smoothie options for breakfast. Make a healthy green smoothie or a dairy-free protein shake by adding a protein powder or non-fat Greek yogurt to a cup of non-fat milk or another non-fat dairy beverage.

Add some frozen fruit for extra flavor and a serving of protein or fiber to get you through a morning workout.

Summary

Smoothies are always lightweight food for your diet. It gives more and more benefits to your body. You can include a smoothie instead of your meal. It’s your choice to make your own smoothie for your happiness.
