Common skincare mistakes that most of us make. This is going to keep you on the mark with what you’re doing and keep you from spending a fortune.
Avoid this if you can.
Don’t overclean your skin!
As much as I love a good cleanse, I wouldn’t advocate scrubbing away your face for 45 minutes at a time. There’s always a way to cleanse your face without it getting really dry or irritated.
I suggest exfoliating once or twice a week. This means scrubbing in circular motions, not back and forth, and making sure you get every nook and cranny of your skin. Be gentle!
It’s time to make up this error.
Always make up after washing your face.
This isn’t true. Make-up should be worn after cleansing. If you’re going to wear it, do it after cleansing. You’re essentially applying grease on your face.
If you do go to sleep with make-up on, you’re setting yourself up for breakouts. I say this to all my clients and I recommend going over your make-up the night before.
Avoid this if you can.
Put on your favorite moisturizer!
It’s important to be diligent with your moisturizer, but you don’t need to slather it on in the morning. You should use it after cleansing. Moisturizer is like your skin’s best friend.
It evens things out, making your skin feel softer and more balanced. I suggest moisturizing the skin in the evening and then putting on a heavier lotion during the day if you want to keep it in place. This is more likely to do the trick.
Makeup is not a replacement for exfoliation.
We’ve all heard this one: “When I’m done with my makeup I never apply moisturizer because my skin is already moisturized.” This is a mistake. Moisturizer is your best friend, but it shouldn’t take the place of exfoliation.
When you exfoliate, you’re getting rid of the dead skin cells, while the moisturizer is replenishing the lost moisture and helping your skin stay moist.
It is important to exfoliate.
I’m going to talk about cleansing the skin below, but I want to mention the importance of exfoliation. It’s not a myth that everyone needs to exfoliate every single day, I actually think it’s important to do every other day.
Your skin is constantly fighting bacteria, and if you haven’t been cleaning it well, those bacteria will start growing on your skin and make it prone to breakouts.
Apply a light sunscreen daily.
Even the best SPF products will not protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun all day. Even if you’re only applying a sheer tint to your face, it still needs to be put on before putting on makeup. Skin is a living thing and has needs that can’t be met by mere coverage.
Don’t put on foundation if you don’t like it.
If you hate the look of foundation you can go ahead and avoid it. I don’t recommend avoiding foundation entirely because you’ll have trouble with color matching. I just suggest applying it at night when you’re not ready to see your face and doing as little as you can to even it out.
Apply a tinted moisturizer if you need extra coverage.
This is usually the best option. If you’re in a hurry, it’s best to apply a tinted moisturizer before putting on your makeup. This will keep you looking put-together, while still providing some coverage.
Avoid this if you can.
Don’t wash your face.
You should always wash your face. If you’re going to apply make-up, you want your face clean so it’s easy to apply and stay put. You don’t want to be scrubbing around on your face to apply makeup. Cleanliness is important.
I’m really glad I got to share these common skincare mistakes with you.
