The Diabetes Prevention Programme The programme was initiated by Professor Gregory W. Storch, a University of Pittsburgh Professor who was a staunch advocate of the therapeutic benefits of behavioral modification for controlling blood glucose levels and preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes. Storch's work was further validated through his long-term follow-up in a number of clinical trials of the effects of this behaviour modification in preventing or delaying diabetes. In 1998, he published a small randomized controlled trial of overweight and obese adults enrolled in a county-wide randomized controlled trial of the Diabetes Prevention Program, which examined the benefits of an intensive lifestyle intervention to reduce high-risk diabetes risk.
