My Body Is Trying To Kill Me

The Annoyances Of Diabetes

Introduction

I know the title is clickbait, but I do feel at times my body does make life difficult for me.

Each morning, I wake up, and my initial blood sugar readings are fine, and then suddenly they jump, even though I haven't eaten or drunk anything.

While I maintain my health well, I thought I would do what we all should not do and look on that there internet thing.

The music is "Dance of the Red Corpuscles" from the album "Music From The Body" By Ron Geesin and Roger Waters

This Is What I Found:

I asked ChatGPT this question:

I am diabetic. Why does my blood sugar go up when I get up, even though I have not eaten or drunk anything

I screenshotted the answer, so none of the text in this piece is AI-generated. It is all my own words, but this is the answer ChatGPT gave me:

I check my blood sugar levels with my Libre Scanner, which I was dubious about at first, but has been an absolute godsend, and you can read about that here:

I know that as soon as I eat, my blood sugar goes up, and so does yours. Everything you eat is converted into sugar in order to fuel your body. My problem is that the sugar is not converted into fuel and therefore lies around in arteries and veins, and sugar is corrosive to our blood vessels.

I am insulin-resistant, so I have to inject, and what that does is turn any residual blood sugar into fat, so if I don't exercise, I just get fatter, and the fatter I get, the more insulin I need to keep myself alive.

When I first started injecting, I was not told about the effect and put on a lot of weight. When I was told what was happening, I did something about it, and now I weigh less, but I could do with losing another ten kilograms.

Today I went to the hospital for a scan, and had to not eat or drink anything but water, or black tea or coffee.

I spent most of the day feeling extremely hungry but unable to eat anything. They say that diabetes just forces you to do what you are supposed to do anyway, but it is nice to have a treat every now and then.

One of my problems is that I have a sweet tooth and love cake and chocolate, but almost everything you eat has a lot of sugar in it. If I have milk, the lactose really knocks my blood sugar up, but eventually that is converted to fat, and then in the morning it is released back into my body as sugar to wake me up.

Sometimes I get ridiculous advice from certain medical people, like I should only eat celery, carrots and turnips. When I told my consultant about that, they said you have to enjoy life, and as long as you don't overindulge, then that is good, and that is how I deal with looking after myself.

My uncle and grandma used to have diabetic chocolate and diabetic jam, and when I last saw my uncle, I asked him why he didn't have real chocolate and jam in small amounts. He didn't answer, but I could never eat diabetic sweet stuff.

Conclusion

I know this is a bit rambling, and thank you for giving me your time. I do look after myself, do a lot of walking and intend to be around for a very long time.

So today I will just have one meal, but I will be back to normal tomorrow.

".... if I don't exercise, I just get fatter, and the fatter I get, the more insulin I need to keep myself alive." - It's a vicious cycle, Mike. My mother has diabetes, which has now robbed her of her sight due to glaucoma. I always said to her "You have to have some pleasures in life, but only in moderation."

How do you feel about the flavor of licorice? Licorice root tea has no sugar (or negligible sugar) but it has a very sweet flavor. It taste different and I think better than the artificial sweeteners that are so common now. Could be a way to scratch be itch without actual sweets. For that matter I’ve had some pretty good cocoa teas too

  • Wow, that must have been quite exhausting! But indeed, you will be back to normal tomorrow. Do rest well.
