Day 19 of My 40 Day Fast: Spirituality and Meat
The reason for abstaining is not what you think
To understand the spiritual reason behind not eating meat one must have an understanding of the body’s digestive system. The brain is connected to the digestive system through many channels, so much so that the gut has been referred to as the second brain. One of the primary functions of the body is to digest food. The digestive system is the majority of our body. When the body is digesting food a lot of resources are used to break it down and absorb its nutrients. The brain focuses on digestion to the extent that when one feels a strong negative emotion, the brain halts the digestive system. Our emotions can disrupt the digestive process.
When we are in a spiritual time, we are trying to connect with God or higher beings. This requires the mind’s attention. When the mind is free it is better able to connect to God. The channels are clear. When the digestion system is activated, the brain is distracted.
Meat takes the longest to digest and uses a lot of the body’s enzymes to break it down. This holds the brain’s focus for longer. We are unable to meditate, pray, or commune with God in an optimal way when the body is digesting meat.
Plants require less work from the digestive system. Some plants can go through the stomach in an hour or less. Digesting plants uses less of the brain’s resources leaving it free for spirituality.
A fasted state is best for praying and meditating as there is no digesting, which leaves your channels to God clear. In the morning before breakfast is an advantageous time for spirituality.
This is the reason why pandits (Hindu priests) have always been encouraged to refrain from eating meat. Their duty is to connect with God and bring messages to earth. The channels to God are more clear when the brain isn’t busy digesting meat. When Hindus go to the temple it is for the purpose of connecting with and worshipping God, and it is easier to do this when the body isn’t digesting meat. Hindu festivals are a time of spirituality. When the brain is concentrating on digestion, the mind's channels to God become muddled.
There is something to be said about the state of meat today. I write about this in a previous post. You can read about it by clicking the story below.
The meat consumed today is unhealthy. The animals are fed a diet of corn and soy to fatten them up. Cows are injected with hormones to ensure they give milk all year rather than when they fall pregnant. Chickens are cooped up in cages. The animals for consumption are treated poorly, instead of with respect considering they give us food. They are kept in unhealthy conditions, which causes stress to the animals. Their lifestyle is not conducive to good health, and that is the meat that society believes is good enough for their bodies.
The meat and dairy industry certainly doesn’t give off a good vibe. There is negative energy surrounding the industry, or bad karma. When you purchase this meat and dairy at the stores, restaurants, and fast food chains, you willingly take part in this negative energy. That is your choice to make. Unhealthy meat and dairy will not produce healthy individuals, and that’s just one of the ways this negative energy can affect a person.
The reason we turn the other cheek to what we know is going on is because we don’t want to change. We want to live our lives the way we always have. It takes a strong will to walk away from all that you know.
If we’re out here talking about breaking generational curses, this is a big one that needs breaking. We need to make the difficult choices in our own lives in order to demand better for our children and grandchildren. Giving in to your urges won’t create change. Breaking generational curses is not for the weak. It asks us to give up a lot of ourselves for the greater good. If you don't do it, then the duty will fall onto the shoulders of someone else in your bloodline. Take one for the team.
Some believe the food is fine because they’re fine. The last study done on the world's health said 95 percent of the world’s population reported a health condition. Health problems are not inevitable; they are the direct cause of our lifestyle.
