Black Coffee, Cherry Tomatoes And A Meniscus Tear

Some Observations On My Current Health

Introduction

I have a feeling that if I had been born ten or twenty years earlier, or in the USA, I would be dead by now. When I was diagnosed with Liver Cancer, a lot of American friends advised me to get second and third opinions, and I told them I was in the best place in the world to get treatment, so I didn't need to go anywhere else. You can read about that here:

If you know me, you know I have lots of things wrong with me, but I am lucky to have the brilliant NHS to look after me. I have been a diagnosed diabetic for twenty-five years. I do keep on top of it, but my blood sugars often shoot up, and I was not sure why. My love for chocolate and sweet things doesn't help.

Last year, I got a blood sugar tracker, which I documented here:

Now on to the point of this story....

A Meniscus Tear

Three weeks ago, something happened to my right leg, and I found it very difficult to walk and was in a great deal of pain, both walking and keeping still. With heat sprays and Voltarol, I managed to make it bearable, and a little research suggested a meniscus tear in the knee.

At the weekend I was walking a lot around Inverness and did not feel any ill effects, although I can't put a lot of weight on that leg (and I have a lot of weight, believe you me, though for the first time in years I am under 100Kg, yeah it is only 99.2Kg but that was an unexpected milestone)

It is now 90% better, so it must be healing. I didn't go to the doctor because it was difficult to describe, and I have my annual review on Monday, so I can bring it up then if I need to.

Cherry Tomatoes

The Effect Of Milk On My Blood Sugar

Earlier this week, I ran out of milk for my coffee, so I took it black. I have also started snacking on cherry tomatoes, which really stop me from wanting to eat anything else, and they are not chocolate, biscuits or cake, so no sugar rush.

Everything we eat is turned into sugar to drive our body, but if it is not used, it lies in the blood vessels and rots them, so to combat that, I have to take insulin and other medication.

I routinely check my blood sugar, and usually it sits around 8 or 9 until I eat, and then it goes up high. You can see this from my time in rage for the last ninety days.

While I feel fine, that is not great.

While I know milk is a carbohydrate, I did not think milk in coffee would make that much difference, and I blamed the spikes on eating.

This week has been black coffee, and this is the effect:

This started on the 4th of October, and the black coffee started on the 7th, so I have a feeling that by Monday, the green area will be close to 100%.

Conclusion

I am not going to stop drinking milk, like chocolate and cake, I will take it in moderation.

I just wish I were properly aware of this a lot earlier, but I am happy I know now. I am just shocked at how effective it has been for my health.

Oh, and I got a letter from my cancer consultant, my last scan was completely clear.

The music is "Keep Yourself Alive" by Queen, possibly still my favourite song of theirs, thanks to Professor Brian May's guitar sound.

Thank you so much for reading. I just thought I would let you know how I am doing and why.

And this just happened, don't worry, I have fruit to eat!!

Maybe if you start having black coffee you can have more chocolate and less tomatoes. 😄😄 I think you are right the key is everything in moderation.

They say everything in moderation is the way to go. You're doing great Mike and you will heal and be better than before. Just keep doing what you are doing.

Oh man, you're going through a lot mate. I'm glad you're keeping up with everything though ❤️ congrats on joining the black coffee crew as well - I too, love my black coffee - no milk or sugar for me. But there are still tons of options for tasty coffee because there are lots of different coffees out there ❤️ Great piece of writing mate!

I'm amazed you are able to deal with all that you are and still put out so many fabulous stories regularly. I agree with Sandy, you seem to be approaching these health struggles with a refreshing perspective of hope and humor. I have my own blood sugar issues so I know how hard it is to maintain a good mood when your body isn't processing correctly. I don't even realize how agitated I get until my husband asks if I've checked my blood sugar lately. Best of luck to you and congrats on the clean scan. I hope we'll all be able to enjoy another twenty years worth of Mikeydred stories.

Congratulations for your clear scan, Mikeydred, and you are quite right: coffee with dairy and sugar can be a Trojan Horse!

This was such an honest and uplifting read. I really admire how you share your health journey with both humour and hope.
