I started working in a hospital at the age of 22. I had just had a baby and was about to finish nursing school. I was in a level one trauma unit with a connected burns unit. I was intrigued by what happened in the hospital as I discovered how people ended up there. Whether it was a freak accident or a lifetime of choices adding to an event. What I learned was prevention. The key is prevention, and to prevent means to actively make decisions that will help you in the long run. Here's what I learned as a nurse and how you can help yourself before needing the hospital.

1) Healthy is both a mindset and a way of life

Many people come in with ailments that could have been prevented with simple life changes. The biggest one realizes being healthy wasn't a passing fad but, instead, a change that is made consciously. Many times people will tell you they knew they shouldn't be doing something, such as smoking or eating greasy foods, but continued anyway. Make the conscious choice to understand the consequences of your actions and know that you can consciously choose better. You are not a prisoner of your past; you can make new daily decisions to benefit you.

2) Small changes add up, even if it is slowly

People often don't realize that even changing one bad habit is beneficial. Switching from soda to water or from a package of cigarettes a day to half a pack is still in progress. Or even switching from regular soda to diet is very helpful. The beginning is the most essential step. Feel free to start. As the old saying goes, the way to eat a whole elephant is to take the first bite.

3) Exercise is not a recommendation

I'm sure you look at those flawless photos on Instagram and figure that no amount of exercise you do will make you look like that. Well, maybe not. But what's better than mindlessly scrolling on Instagram, pining over a body you won't have? At least trying to get that body. Get off your couch and your phone, and look at yourself. The grass is greener where you water it. Your body needs you to exercise. Please take a moment to appreciate the amount of movement your body can do. It is an extraordinary machine. Refer to #2 on this list, and start with the first step.

4) Your body gives you hints

If you notice that particular food makes you feel awful after eating it, your body is talking to you. It is saying, please don't give me that again. You have to decide what to fuel your body with, and it will tell you if you've made the right choice. Processed foods and refined sugars are a no-go; however, if needed, do so in small amounts. Focus on fresh fruits and veggies. Try trading out some of your other snacks for alternatives, like apples and peanut butter or carrots and hummus. Your body will thank you.

5) Finally, this is your one body

If you aren't going to take good care of yourself, then who is? You will need to make those small changes for yourself. YOU are the only one who can treat you the best. And you deserve it. You deserve to feel good in your body and to treat it even better.

It didn't take me long to realize that I had the power to change my story and be better for myself. Not just to keep me out of the hospital but to also be there for my baby and myself. You can do this.
