India’s theatrical market is experiencing a remarkable resurgence in 2025, with a 14% surge in box office collections during the first half of the year, according to Ormax Media’s latest India Box Office Report: Jan-Jun 2025.

The period drama Chhaava, a historical action epic starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, has emerged as the crown jewel of this cinematic renaissance, grossing a staggering $80.4 million (₹693 crore) worldwide and claiming the title of the highest-grossing Indian film of the year so far.

This blockbuster, alongside a robust lineup of regional films, has propelled India’s box office to ₹5,723 crore ($664.2 million), just ₹12 crore shy of the all-time January-June record set in 2023.

As Telugu cinema continues to captivate audiences globally, Chhaava’s Telugu-dubbed release has further amplified its success, while streaming platforms like iBomma offer fans alternative ways to experience this cinematic triumph.

Chhaava: A Historical Epic Conquering the Box Office

Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Maddock Films, Chhaava is a dramatization of the fierce resistance led by Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Vicky Kaushal’s portrayal of Sambhaji has struck a chord with audiences, particularly in Maharashtra, where the historical figure is revered.

Despite mixed reviews citing historical inaccuracies and a “loud tone,” the film’s high-octane action sequences, emotional depth, and Kaushal’s commanding performance have fueled its box office dominance.

Rashmika Mandanna, playing Yesubai, and a supporting cast including Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, and Divya Dutta, add further gravitas to the narrative.

Chhaava opened on February 14, 2025, with a global collection of $19 million over its debut weekend, including $15 million from India alone. By its sixth day, it crossed $25 million globally, and after 41 days, it amassed $85 million worldwide, with $73 million from India, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.

In India, the film netted ₹602.01 crore, making it the third Bollywood film to enter the ₹600 crore club, trailing only Jawan and Stree 2.

The Telugu-dubbed version, released on March 7, 2025, across 550 screens in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, added ₹15.01 crore net to its Indian tally, surpassing Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 (₹9.82 crore) and securing the fourth-highest Telugu-dubbed Bollywood film gross, just behind Brahmastra (₹15.27 crore).

The film’s success is not limited to box office numbers. Chhaava has garnered cultural and political acclaim, with states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa declaring it tax-free to encourage viewership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the film at the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, noting, “Maharashtra and Mumbai have elevated Hindi cinema along with Marathi films, and Chhaava is making waves these days.” Maharashtra Minister Aditi Sunil Tatkare also organized a special screening for MLAs and MLCs, underscoring the film’s regional significance.

Streaming Chhaava on iBomma and Beyond

For fans unable to catch Chhaava in theaters, the film is expected to stream on Netflix starting April 11, 2025, approximately 40 days after its theatrical run, aligning with the typical window for Indian blockbusters.

However, Telugu audiences have another option: iBomma, a popular streaming platform known for hosting Telugu movies and dubbed content. While iBomma has gained traction for offering free access to a vast library of Telugu films, users should exercise caution, as the platform operates in a legal gray area and may pose security risks.

To stream Chhaava on iBomma, users can visit the website, search for the Telugu-dubbed version, and select from available quality options (e.g., 720p or 1080p). However, official platforms like Netflix provide a safer and higher-quality viewing experience, with subscriptions ensuring access to Chhaava and other premium content.

India’s Theatrical Market: A Powerhouse in 2025

The Indian box office’s 14% growth in 2025 reflects a vibrant and diverse cinematic landscape. The first half of the year saw 17 films cross the ₹100 crore mark domestically, up from 10 in 2024. June alone contributed over ₹900 crore ($104.5 million), with Hindi films Sitaare Zameen Par ($23.3 million) and Housefull 5 ($23.2 million) leading the pack.

Telugu cinema, holding a 19% market share, trailed Hindi’s 39% but outperformed Tamil (17%) and matched Malayalam and Hollywood at 10% each. Telugu films like Sankranthiki Vasthunam ($25.8 million), Game Changer ($17.8 million), and Daaku Maharaaj (₹91 crore) have bolstered the industry’s success, with Sankranthiki Vasthunam securing the second spot behind Chhaava.

This growth signals a potential record-breaking year, with projections estimating a ₹13,500 crore close, surpassing the 2022 record. The resurgence of mid-budget films and pandemic-sidelined genres, such as dramas and comedies, has complemented big-budget spectacles.

Smaller Tamil and Telugu films like Dragon (₹102 crore) and Tourist Family (₹61 crore) have also found success, highlighting the industry’s ability to cater to diverse audiences.

The Global Rise of Telugu Cinema

Telugu cinema, or Tollywood, is riding a wave of global popularity, driven by its high-octane action, compelling narratives, and crossover appeal. Films like Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024), which grossed over $200 million worldwide, and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), the first Telugu film to cross ₹1,000 crore, have set the stage for Tollywood’s international dominance.

In 2025, Sankranthiki Vasthunam and Game Changer have continued this trend, with the former achieving blockbuster status at ₹187 crore domestically. The Telugu-dubbed version of Chhaava exemplifies the industry’s “pan-Indian” strategy, where films transcend linguistic boundaries to attract nationwide audiences.

Globally, Telugu films are gaining traction in markets like the United States, Canada, and Australia, where diaspora communities and subtitle-friendly audiences drive demand. Streaming platforms like iBomma, Aha, and Netflix have amplified this reach, making Telugu content accessible worldwide.

The success of stars like Rashmika Mandanna, who features in both Chhaava and Pushpa 2, underscores Tollywood’s growing influence. Her last three films have collectively grossed nearly $400 million, cementing her as a pan-Indian superstar.

Chhaava Scrutiny

Challenges and Criticisms

Despite its triumphs, Chhaava has faced scrutiny. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 36% approval rating, citing historical inaccuracies and an overly bombastic tone.

However, audience enthusiasm, particularly in Hindi and Telugu regions, has overshadowed these critiques. The film’s Telugu release, while successful, saw a dip in momentum after its opening weekend, suggesting that dubbing alone cannot sustain long-term box office performance without sustained word-of-mouth.

Moreover, the reliance on platforms like iBomma raises concerns about piracy’s impact on theatrical revenues. While iBomma offers convenience, it may divert viewers from official channels, affecting the industry’s bottom line. The Indian film industry must balance accessibility with protecting intellectual property to sustain its 2025 momentum.

Looking Ahead

As Chhaava continues its theatrical run and prepares for its OTT debut, its success underscores the Indian film industry’s resilience and diversity. The 14% box office jump in 2025 reflects a market that thrives on both spectacle and substance, with Telugu cinema playing a pivotal role in this growth.

Whether watched in theaters or streamed on platforms like iBomma or Netflix, Chhaava is a testament to India’s cinematic prowess and its ability to captivate audiences worldwide.

With projections of a record-breaking year, the Indian box office is poised for a historic 2025. As Telugu films continue to break barriers and Hindi cinema solidifies its dominance, Chhaava stands as a beacon of this golden era, proving that stories rooted in history can resonate across languages and borders.
