A Few of My Hyper-fixations Over The Years!

pick my brain a little bit here

By angela hepworthPublished 8 months ago 4 min read

Over the years, I’ve had many a hyper-fixation. I have a rather obsessive personality, for better or for worse, and I feel deeply passionate about a great deal of things and people. So today, as I’m stuck home for yet another day with bronchitis and pink eye, I decided to write this up to make me feel a little better.

So here’s some of the things I’ve loved and love! I’d love if you guys shared your own past or present obsessions in the comments :)

The Series of Unfortunate Events

Quite possibly my first hyper-fixation ever—this book series is amazing. It follows the tragic journeys of the Baudelaire orphans, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, after the death of their parents in a mysterious fire, as misfortune continually plagues them. I’m doing my first-ever reread of it, alongside watching the Netflix series (starring Neil Patrick Harris as Olaf, which is awesome) I never got around to, and it’s been such a nostalgic and amazing experience and story to relive. These books shaped me in my most formative years, and I really attribute falling in love with reading to the Baudelaires and to these thirteen books. The dark humor, the dreariness, the delectably pretentious narrator and author, and the intriguing mystery elements made the books stand out from anything else I remember reading in my childhood. It’s an incredibly unique and memorable series.

Mel Blanc

My very first celebrity obsession—for some strange reason—was Mel Blanc. I LOVED Mel Blanc. I loved him to the goddamn moon and back. I thought it was incredibly awesome and cool that he alone was responsible for the voice acting of nearly every Looney Tunes character. His talent and his range blew me away; I could barely wrap my little child brain around it. I knew every single character he voiced. I read his book. I watched his interviews. I just thought he was an incredible guy, and he was. Seeing the face behind so many famous voices was just so awesome to me.

Rupaul’s Drag Race

I was never a reality TV type of person—until I started watching Drag Race. Rupaul’s Drag Race is some of the best TV you will ever watch. I guarantee it. There are so many incredibly talented and hilarious queens in every single season. The drama is always so juicy and so, so good. The challenges the queens compete in are so unique and silly and fun to watch, and the runways are gorgeous and always incredibly impressive. Watching this show really made me develop a respect and even a reverence for drag, even from a young age, at a time where it was looked down upon and not respected as the art form it is. Unfortunately, we still see drag being undermined and demonized, especially in this current political climate, which makes me so upset. Even still, I love that Drag Race has the fame now to persist and thrive despite the backlash from insignificant, discriminatory people.

Undertale

Shameless plug—I love Undertale. It is one of the best games I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing, and it deserves every ounce of the hype that it gets. Everything about this game is memorable and amazing. The characters are hilarious and so full of heart and soul. The dialogue is so funny, creative, and one-of-a-kind. The fights are innovative and fun. The art and the animation just drips with care and detail. The soundtrack is beyond phenomenal. And Undertale is one of the very few role-playing games where the choices you make in this game actually matter. They have dire consequences, and the game never, ever forgets, or lets you forget, what you’ve done. It feels like your own little world, and it actually deals with some very heavy themes, if you look for them. It is just such a unique and immersive experience. Undertale makes you fall in love with it again and again.

Cate Blanchett

Ah, my bisexual awakening. But that aside, there’s just something I love about Cate Blanchett. She’s an amazing actress. She’s beautiful. She has incredible range. She’s absolutely captivating in every role. There is such a magic and an allure about her brand of acting in particular that makes her so invigorating to watch. So, of course, middle school me had to watch absolutely every movie she’s ever been in. Good thing she has a pretty good catalogue, because I honestly don’t regret it. She is one of the absolute greats to me.

Megan Thee Stallion

I love Megan so, so much. Besides being probably the world’s most gorgeous woman, because my goodness, she is stunning, I think she is one of the most talented rappers in the game right now, and I despise anyone who despises her. Her music oozes with feel-good, braggadocios sexuality and confidence, and I love that she exists in the midst of the macho, sometimes misogynistic culture of the hip hop world. She’s paved such a path in the world of hip hop for women, and for her to be so authentically herself is inspiring. On top of that, she just seems like such a lovely person. She’s so funny and sweet with her fans, and her confidence and joy is infectious. She’s been through so much pain and faced so much turmoil so far in her life, and I hope for nothing but happiness and love to come her way. Meg—we love you, girl.

Anime Out of Context

This is one of my absolute favorite podcasts to listen to in my free time. The premise is both strong and unique: a huge anime fan, Shaun, makes his super critical, anime-dreading friend Remington watch a few episodes of various anime, and Remington reviews the shows in intricate, and often brutal, detail, as well as sharing his thoughts on them. It’s absolutely hilarious. The hosts are so witty and clever, and their dynamic is genuine and awesome. It’s a hilarious podcast; I’ve never listened to a bad episode, not once.

Also, she's hot AF. Definitely falls into my preferred category of leggy, bossy blondes, LOL

Loved this! Couldn’t be more relatable. Kate Blanchet seems to really be a universal experience for the girlies 💅🏽 I had so much fun reading this. It kind of felt like those teen magazines we’d read in the mid 2000’s

This was a fun read Angela! I've been obsessed with many things over the years including Tupac, Corey Haim, Adrien Brody, Tyrese, Paul Walker. 10 things I hate about you! Save the last dance! 90210, MTV Road Rules and The Real World and their casts! 90s Talk shows, Degrassi High, makeup, Rap, neo soul. Clubbing! Learning new things, 90s music & culture in general! Hoagies sandwiches, Joel Osteen and last but not least God, Jesus and the word, I'm not a big church person though. Right now I am obsessed with Sugar-free Twizzlers. These were just a few things that came to mind! :)) 🌸
