humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
The Check
The Check “Diane, can you get back to the office? The courier dropped off a check from that company that Dr. Lane has been waiting for?” Her boss, Bob Peters screamed. She knew that this meant he was hyper, an overreacting. Diane had been hired three months ago, and then the pandemic hit. It was the first time that she had built up a vacation day, and she was taking it. Yes, she knew the virus was raging, but if she did nothing but ride back and forth on the Q Line up and down Woodward Avenue, she was getting out that darn house.

The Real Little Black Book
February was always the best month of the year in Arizona. It was still chilly from the winter but not yet taking on the desert's heat from the summer. I peered back into the rearview mirror, putting down my windows and placing my hands on the wheel. I turned down the radio so I could hear the silence. It calmed me a lot these days. I couldn’t tell if I was trying to decipher the voices in my head or quiet them. I was only 20 at this point, but I swear my soul felt aged far beyond that. My childhood wasn’t easy, but I refused to be a victim. Instead, I listened to every podcast, read every book, studied every successful person out there, and decided that I wouldn’t stop until I was happy. What a paradox, I thought. Work to be happy, never happy cause all I do is work.

The Bad Beat
She hauled her skirt down as far as she could and followed Vince into the poker room. She had worn her most scandalous outfit at his insistence as she readied herself for their dinner date. At Luigi’s she would order the fettuccine alfredo, even though Vince would make some sort of comment. It took her an hour to get her makeup right. Covering the bluish bruise around her right eye required several layers of concealer. Tonight, things would be light and easygoing. Carefree, even.

The Book for Atonement
The doorbell rang ten times with identical one-second intervals. Romina’s heart raced as she slowly began to remember what most likely this could mean. She could not dare to consider that this unusual calling could be a random act nor the actions of some desperate, thoughtless, impatient person. She did not have to try hard to welcome the conviction that the day she had been waiting for so long had finally arrived.

Take Care
Amy Pontenski sat in the passenger seat of her fathers new Buick. She stared out the window at the passing houses, businesses, and patrol. She pressed her forehead against the plastic covering the window and scratched an itch beneath her mask as it always had a way of irritating her skin. “Stop picking,” Her father Cecil scolded. “I’m just itching,” she grumbled. She sighed loudly thinking to herself, I’ll never be old enough for him to stop scolding me. He looked at her with contempt as though he heard this.
