humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
Still Worth Something
The building was a mangled black silhouette against the romantic violets and vivid pinks of the dawn sky. Bent at the waist and leaning against another tower, as though it’s death had been so painful that it had looked to it’s neighbour for aid, it had obviously once been a most grand edifice in this now desolate city. Yet now, like all the great structures in this fallen metropolis, it had succumb to time and nature. With parts of it’s skeleton exposed to the elements, it loomed over the town like the bones of some impossible dinosaur, frozen in it’s final moments of extinction; the wind that howled through it’s open wounds, an echo of it’s dying lament.

Barn Raiser
A young couple was walking down the sidewalk of a moderately sized town, hand in hand, enjoying the bright fall weather on a rare joint day off. Plans consisting of hurriedly doing as many chores as possible, then treating themselves to coffee and sweets at the local cafe. The couple entered the cozy, warmly lit cafe and placed their orders. They found a place in a little worn love seat by the fireplace and chatted happily as they set out their spread on the coffee table. Carlita made a confused face, shifting her weight uncomfortably as she had noticed something under herself.

Lincoln, Nebraska
There it sat. A little black book. Perched upon the precipice of the porch railing. Innocuous, in and of itself, save for the simple fact that I live alone and a mere two minutes ago had been sitting on the porch watching the storm clouds gather in the distance, with no little black book in sight.

Do We Have to Spell it Out for You?
Mike was standing in line waiting to board the flight, he was hoping he didn’t look as awkward as he felt. To the people who were outside his own head he didn’t look awkward at all. He was a good looking guy, in his late 30’s with blonde hair, greenish-blue eyes and an inviting yet mysterious smile. He had always been popular with the ladies but struggled with keeping guy friends. He could make plenty of acquaintances but his cutting humor and weird ways seemed to drive away everyone except romantic partners. Those he had to beat off with a stick. Turns out you can be as weird as you want when you're successful, handsome and amazing in bed. He is normally very confident but the cause of his awkwardness this day is his lack of female companionship on this vacation. He had traveled for work alone many times, but this felt foreign to him. The trip was a vacation he planned with his ex-girlfriend over a year ago. It was already bought and paid for, no take backs; so he was alone and feeling out of place.

Your Imagination Runnin’ Away with Me
Manifest verb : to make evident or certain by showing or displaying Dear diary, it’s Jonathan again, the last of the millennials. Last night my anxiety brought me to another conclusion about my generation. Everyone is convinced they’re chronically depressed or mentally unstable so they follow the trend and get therapy. Of course I feel at ease now. I no longer have to hide carrying you around, my tragic diary.

Containers
She keeps her emotions contained. Her rage is spoken through clenched teeth, directly into a solid, wooden box, worn smooth with use, splitting with the effort to hold it all in. If she had realized the need, she would have made it larger, but at the tender age of five she still had hope and the belief of pure goodness. Now the box zaps and sizzles every time she screams into it. Torn, ragged edges of anger arc and escape before the lid has closed.

Artifact
She was wired. Two friends touched her within the hour. One grabbed her arm near the elbow, locking eyes. Punching him playfully, he pretended to fall to the ground. The other gave a quick hug. Both were shocked. Literally. “Ouch!” and “you shocked me!!” She hadn’t felt the spark. It was a dry winter.
