humanity
For better or for worse, relationships reveal the core of the human condition.
I couldn't be a delivery driver (specifically for my flat)
I live in a black hole. That is a belief I suppose is held by every delivery driver that comes to my flat. It's not even down to the fact that I do not have a working intercom system, frankly I feel that I am in a black hole that can only be approached one way, where every other path seems to be an optical illusion.

The Pelican
In my defense, I’m not usually afraid of birds. But staring into the pelican's icy blue eyes, I was suddenly aware of every single part of my body - from my slightly numb toes - exposed in waterproof sandals to the wisps of hair that kept falling out of my high ponytail.

Fetching the Eggs
I softly knocked on the exam room door, then entered. An elderly woman perched in her wheelchair, unable to clamber onto the exam table. The diminutive floral print of her cotton dress harkened back to the 1950’s, a time when she had been in her prime. Her bird-like black eyes met mine and she blessed me with a lopsided smile, the same glance and smile she had shared when I was a little girl. I pulled out my stethoscope and warmed the diaphragm with my breath.

"The Devil's Food"
"That is the devil's food," Mother stated, sneering at a young woman outside of a local coffee shop. I looked at the young woman's plate with envy. I know envy a sin, but at least her mother never deprived her of one of the most supposedly delicious foods in every normal family's culture. A frothed latte sat next to her plate with a slice of chocolate cake. The layered, iced decadence tempted my eyes and made my mouth water despite having no idea what it might taste like. The icing appeared light and fluffy, and appeared to be filled with the devil's own ingredient, cocoa. A coffee or latte was never to touch my lips, but even more adamantly a piece of chocolate cake was never acceptable either. Back in the 1900s the chocolate creation of devil's food cake came into being, and my family had been depriving their children of it ever since. It sounds crazy, and it is. Despite this, I've come to realize many religious families buy into multitudes of delusions.

Survival in the Sea
Stealth is the best I can do to describe my long, sleek, elegant, and meandering body moving through the heavy pressure-laden ocean water. Gliding seamlessly with almost no friction, my big torpedo-shaped mass with triangle fins and tail part the water with ease. I don’t speak. I make no noise. I have no organs that make noises. I have no bones. Mechanical perfection: I move, and I swim. I look around with my dead, brooding, dark eyes. My rows of teeth seem to grin or smile as you call it? I am the perfect creation of Mother Nature. I am a live machine of purpose. I am perfection of life.
