James Wan’s newest edition in his horror collection, Malignant, opened in theaters and became available for streaming on HBO MAX September 10. The story revolves around our main protagonist Maddie (Annabelle Wallis), and an ever increasing dark presence that has come back in her life. She begins to experience strange phenomena, like witnessing several murders without being at the actual scene of the crime. She has also been attacked by a dark shadowy figure in her house. After talking with her mother, she finds out that as a child she had an imaginary friend named Gabriel (Marina Mazepa and Ray Chase) and he talked Maddie into doing naughty things. Is Gabriel causing the strange and brutal murders? Or is it all in Maddie’s head?

Movie Review: 'Malignant' from Director James Wan
Malignant stars Annabelle Wallis as Madison, a woman in an abusive relationship. When Madison returns home from work she gets into an argument with her husband, Derek (Jake Abel). He shoves Madison’s head into the wall hard enough to break the wall and cut Madison’s head open. He leaves, she locks him out of the bedroom and worries how his abuse might have affected her unborn child.

Bird Box
What’s in a name? My journey to watching this movie was a funny one. My husband and kids watched it before me as I was busy with other things. I watched snippets of the movie over their shoulders and got a general idea of what the movie was about. When I did finally watch it, I was intrigued about the choice of title — Bird Box. Why Bird Box? Birds did play a part in the movie but it wasn’t such a major part - Was it?. The film is about strange sightings of invisible creatures and voices that induce people to self-harm and/or commit suicide. The directors, producers, and screenwriters must have decided and settled on a short name I guess

Horror Classics: The House on Haunted Hill. Top Story - September 2021.
Welcome back to the Horror Classics series! Last time we discussed Twins of Evil, the third entry in Hammer Studios' Karnstien Trilogy. Now, there are many more Hammer films to discuss but I can't only do those; I have to do other films too. With that in mind, I thought I'd share a personal favorite of mine: House on Haunted Hill.

‘Candyman’ (2021) Movie Review. Top Story - September 2021.
Candyman (2021), the latest in the current trend of belated sequels to classic movies, is about Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), an artist in Chicago who visits the now-gentrified Cabrini Green housing project and learns the legend of Candyman, a hook-handed, fur-coated supernatural killer who appears if you say his name five times while looking in a mirror. Inspired by the legend, Anthony creates an art installation meant to invite viewers to summon the titular killer. But of course, people around him begin to die, and his grip on reality starts to slip.

‘Malignant’ Review—Bold Unpredictable Horror
Wan, two, three, four. Horror movies, we want more! When The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It arrived in theaters last June, it was generally unanimous that the film was okay but would have been better had horror master James Wan returned to direct the threequel.

‘Karen’ Is a Cinematic Assault on the Intellect
The slang term ‘Karen’ represents the racist, entitled white women of suburbia. A creature from the lagoon of (usually) far-right misinformation. Stereotypically, you can see a ‘Karen’ donning a bob cut with blonde highlights. As per usual, a ‘Karen’ doesn’t consider herself a racist despite outing herself as one in any debate concerning the subject of race. Notably, she’s instantly suspicious of Black people and doesn’t hesitate to call the authorities on them for even the most innocuous of offenses.

Apostle (2018) Review
Apostle is a period horror/thriller film that first premiered at Fantastic Fest in September 2018 but later began streaming on Netflix in October of the same year. Often compared to the 1973 film ‘The Wicker Man’, Apostle takes us on Thomas’ journey to rescue his sister after she is held ransom by a cult that has chosen to leave society to begin their own village. The cult worships Her – the island’s goddess, who replenishes the crops and keeps the island healthy and sustainable. But the goddess has not been cooperative as of late, and so the cult's founders take to unethical methods to try and force the goddess into doing as they please. An idea clearly doomed to fail – but that’s the point. Apostle’s strain of horror doesn’t focus upon what would happen if we were haunted by the supernatural, but rather upon what happens when man becomes desperate.

Psycho: The Godfather of Slashers
They say you never forget your first. My parents used to tell this story about a night when I was around three or four years old, they left me and my brother with a baby-sitter so they could go to a church function. A potluck, a night without the kids, probably a few riveting rounds of bingo. Apparently, as the tale goes, this lovely and sweet teen from our little baptist church thought it would be a great idea to let me watch "Psycho" with her. Everything seemed fine until the next morning, when I started running around the house with a play knife from my Fisher Price kitchen making the infamous nose that accompanied that scene. Ree! Ree! Ree! My parents called up the babysitter, she admitted everything. They were less than thrilled. While I don’t remember this, I do remember how profoundly important "Psycho" always seemed to be in the world of horror and media in general. All its iterations, homages, and impacts. I went to a film camp, a Christian film camp, in my teens and even they could not help but use the movie in references for framing, camera angles, storytelling. My local Red Robin had a blown up still of Marion Leigh’s final moments, that terrified shrieking visage, hanging outside the bathrooms. Framed in gold. Classy.
