The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Dario Argento was still a few years from being the acknowledged maestro of Italian horror cinema when he made this effective and absorbing little Giallo (i.e. “yellow” films, originally a reference to cheap Italian knockoffs of popular English mystery and crime books). It presents to us a rather trite concept—a man that can’t remember the murder, or, in this case, attempted murder he witnesses. We’re never quite apprised of why this is the case; I mean, he doesn’t seem like the sort of fellow who is suffering from shock. However, we’re taken on a slow immersion into the world of Mr. Dalmas the writer, who is in Italy to recharge his literary batteries and, along the way, score with all the hot Italian ladies. Or, at the very least, one blonde one, Julia (Suzy Kendall).

Terrifier 3 was one of the few films I was able to watch on opening night. I have to say that while I still prefer the sequel, I think Terrifier 3 is a worthy entry for the series.

1993 was the year we discovered not who killed Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee)—we had already learned that a year or two previously, if memory serves. After her killer was revealed, her homicidally incestuous entanglement with demon-possessed father Leland (Ray Wise) came to an end, leaving the series, which had hinged on this particular salient plot point, feeling adrift, and soon to be given the unceremonious axe. What was left over, the remains, though not as their mysterious, tragic, all-American, blue-tinged beauty Laura might suggest, were not washed up on a riverbank, wrapped in plastic, but would go on to become one of the cult hit television oddities of all time.

I was thrilled to watch Re — Animator in theaters again this year for the 40th anniversary. It was pretty awesome to watch this film on the big screen. The experience was amazing, and wow, this film still looks amazing for the time it was released. Imagine you're reading a story about someone who's trapped in a room with a hungry tiger. As a normal, comparatively weak human being they have no hope of besting the tiger in a fight. However, in the far corner of the room is a high-caliber hunting rifle: the perfect defense against a dangerous predator, if they could only get to it. Through trickery and careful maneuvering, the protagonist finally manages to secure the rifle. They turn it on the tiger, aim, fire, and the shot hits the animal directly between the eyes. The tiger immediately falls to the ground. It's a wound deadly enough to kill anything, after all.
